Some high school Spanish students may have learned some new words Monday, but they weren't in Spanish.
Fernando Del Pino, a Spanish teacher at Tates Creek High School, was suspended with pay Tuesday while the district investigates allegations he showed the R-rated movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin to students Monday, said Lisa Deffendall, spokeswoman for Fayette County Public Schools.
"The movie certainly wasn't in Spanish," Deffendall said.
The movie is about a 40-year-old single man named Andy, played by Steve Carell, who has never had sex. His friends try to help him gain experience.
The movie is R-rated -- meaning it is not to be shown to anyone under 17 not accompanied by a parent or guardian -- for pervasive, explicit and crude sexual content and drug use.
Deffendall said a complaint was reported to the district Tuesday, the same day a suspension letter was issued.
The letter states Del Pino's suspension is for up to 20 work days while the investigation continues.
Tates Creek High School's video policy states that parents must give written consent for students to be shown an R-rated movie at school. Alternative assignments must be given to students whose parents object to the movie.
The policy also states that the videos/movies "must be part of the lesson plan with genuine instruction objectives." The policy discourages showing movies as "time filler."

Suspended with pay, of course.
Please explain to me what this movie has to do with learning Spanish?
I tried to watch this total waste of film, but after 15 minutes and upteenth time the characters used the f-word, I found something more useful to do. The teacher deserves the consequences of his stupid action.
Were there any suspensions over "fahrenheit 9-11?"
(crickets)
His DVD didn't offer Spanish subtitles?
Showing it in a HS clas? Unbelievable. Of course, it could have been worse. They could have said a brief prayer before the showing -- but even this teacher understood that that would be crossing the line.
I found the movie hilarious, but in no way would recommend showing this in a classroom to high school students!
I could *almost* see showing it in Spanish, but even then, wrong movie for a classroom...
My AP History teacher showed us the follow movies in 1984-85:

Two of the movies were "history related" and two were not. Nobody complained in class.
Teachers should TEACH, not prop kids in front of a TV screen.
... proving that high school students generally have the aesthetic taste and moral sensibility of three-day-old roadkill.
No pun intended?
Oh, the inhumanity of it all!!
I remember seeing documentary films with titles like "The Wonderful World of Zinc" with pleasure. Anything was better than listening to my teachers drone on.

None of my puns are ever intentional! :o)
We watched 1984...
