In the race to be New Jersey's next U.S. Senator, Republican state Senator Tom Kean Jr. now leads appointed Democratic Senator Robert Menendez 42% to 35%. Kean is son of a popular former governor.
That's quite a change from our December 8 survey, conducted at the time Menendez was appointed. In that survey, Menendez led Kean 38% to 34%. Almost half of those then surveyed, 49%, reported having no opinion of either man.

Conservative? RINO?
Dirty Menendez will win
Worse than RINO...so liberal. Hes left of Chafee and them.
no he isn't. and this seat could well be important with what is happening in other states. Kean can win, he has the name recognition, and Corzine is going to implement some unpopular tax increases this year.
This is looking to be the GOP's best pick-up opportunity. Thomas Kean, Jr. is no Reagan/Bush conservative, but even he's a vast improvement over the current Senator.
I've heard him speak and been ask point blank questions (JSA Teenage Political Convention) He wouldnt support ANWR and called out Bush at fault on Katrina and is semi pro-choice. Now it thats not a RINO you tell me what is.
Kean is not a conservative. However, given the political situation in New Jersey, this is the best we can get. So conservatives should hold their noses and support him.
this is the best chance? man, that's a sad situation. but there is still a long way to go, the administration has been on offense recently for the first time in a long while, and it needs to continue.
i thought you guys were ready to run the Tom Kean / Christine Todd Whitmann school of country club pubbies out of town on a rail ....
You can't possibly want Bob Menendez to win this election. For all his faults, Kean is a far better choice.
hey, we are talking about NJ here. even McCain is against ANWR. the abortion issue will hopefully go back to the states via the court someday, voting down a pro-choice republican senator on that issue alone - its just not worth the trouble anymore. plenty of pro-choice republican RINOs voted for Roberts and are going to vote for Alito.
Kean, Jr. will win in NJ, Steele will win in Maryland and the GOP will hold nearly all their other open seats.
They may lose one.
I see them winning in Minnesota as well.
I said net gain +2 a year ago.
I will not let a biased MSM wish it away.
"this is the best chance? man, that's a sad situation"
Right on the money. Rick Santorum is way behind, Conrad Burns is slipping fast, Jim Talent is in a cliffhanger, and Mark Kennedy is having a more difficult time than expected.
you've got to pick your spots. look how many Democratic senate seats the Dems hold in states that went for Bush and are otherwise Republican - we have to counter that somewhere, someplace, in Dem states, where we elect some RINOs.
In present-day New Jersey, a Reagan conservative CAN'T win, but we can get a senator with an "R" after his name who will vote with the GOP to stop filibusters if nothing else.
look at it this way - RINOs in the senate now - are giving us Roberts and Alito (fingers crossed) on the SCOTUS. If all the RINO seats were held by Dems, the Dems would have the senate majority. And in that case, Roberts and Alito wouldn't be anywhere near the SCOTUS.
So conservatives should hold their noses and support him.
Listen to the Man!
He is correct!
Very blue State, any R that wins Statewide is fantastic.
Chafee included.
Good point. We will see in due time if he can hold his lead...
