Salazar calls Justice Thomas "an abomination"
Rocky Mountain News ^ | January 25, 2006 | Ann Imse

Posted on 01/25/2006 4:41:40 PM PST by mdittmar

Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., today called current U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an "abomination" when compared with the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Marshall, the first black appointed to the Supreme Court, was the lead litigator on the historic 1954 school desegregation case and, as a justice, a champion of civil rights. He died in 1993.

Thomas was the second black appointed to the Supreme Court, and he succeeded the retiring Marshall in 1991 after being nominated by the first President George Bush. Thomas' televised confirmation hearings captured the nation's attention when Professor Anita Hill accused him of sexual harassment, a charge he denied.

As a justice, Thomas has been a staunch conservative who supports states' rights and opposes abortion and affirmative action.

Salazar's comment about Thomas came during a telephone news conference in which said he would not be part of any possible Democratic filibuster to stop a vote on the confirmation of Samuel Alito as a member of the U.S. Supreme Court.

What's the response been to Owens suddenly deciding the REF C money won't be used for education after all, but for other things.....undetermined and undisclosed.

Aren't the voters of Colorado capable of electing someone other than this card-carrying moron?

He's a first termer who convinced just enough people that he is a "moderate". Simple fact is, he lied and got away with it. He's a one term senator for sure.

I am not from Colorado, but I thought Salazar ran as a moderate Democrat.

That is a good question. I thought people in Colorado were smarter

I worked on the campaign, and this is what I observed:

1.A lot of conservative Christians I knew would not vote for Coors because he was a liquor guy!,

2. Also a Catholic- don't underestimate the Protestant/Catholic divide, especially in the privacy of the voting booth,

3. A lot of conservative Hispanics I talked to voted for Salazar because he was Hispanic, no other reason,

4. there was some particulary nasty campaign literature (put out by Bob Schafer,a Republican) in the primary, accusing Coors Beer Company of being a homosexual-friendly company

5. he said he was a conservative Democrat...

Good question! The response appears to be what everyone is saying will be the bloodiest session of the legislature in recent memory.

Here's the problem. Ref's C&D were marketed together, with goodies for everyone, social programs and ed for dems and infrastructure and stuff for pubbies. Nobody thought C could pass and D wouldn't, but that's what happened. The dems are saying, whoa, all our stuff was in C and all your stuff was in D, so pound sand, pubbies. Owens, who ought to be mightily embarrassed how his new dem friends screwed him over, is trying to see to it the Ref C money spreads around to all interest groups, including trans. 30 years of dem governors spent almost nothing on roads.

We'll see. As usual with tax increases, the pols have it spent in their minds about five times over.

Gosh, that's a horrible thing to say.

Why do the voters in Colorado put up with this?

Or having a weak candidate like Pete Coors.

Sorry that your state has to bear the burden of having a man like Salazar as a senator.

Better luck next election.

Faxed his office, with a to the point statement.

Can you imagine the firestorm from the old media if a Republican Senator had called Marshall an "abomination".

The silence on Salazar's remark is deafening.

Owens had a good idea when he first started. For decades the dems couldn't get light rail passed and the pubbies couldn't get new roads passed. So, Owens' idea was do both, and the bond issue passed. The freeway from downtown south to the Tech Center is being rebuilt and light rail is going into the same corridor. It's ahead of schedule and under budget.

But there's so much more do do after 30+ years of neglect.

Yes, whenever your beliefs are questioned, start calling the other person crazy. Right out of the Democrat playbook, as is believing that someone whose politics you like is a perfect person. Grow up.

I don't think Pete Coors was weak candidate.

As noted above, former Congressman Bob Schafer
and those who supported him put out some
particularly nasty campaign literature.
They represented a scorched earth campaign style.

After Pete Coors won the Republican Primary,
I attended a fundraising birthday party for Pete
( cost $50 for a rib eye BBQ).
I could count the other elected Republicans
who attended on two hands.

The Republican Party Elite did not support him.

Do yourself and me a favor. Don't post to me on ANY topic.

Your reasoning skills are clouded by a lack of judgement, IMO.
