Family troubles abound for Rep. Harold Ford
Nashville City Paper ^ | 1/25/6

Posted on 01/25/2006 10:54:05 AM PST by SmithL

If nothing else, Sen. Ophelia Ford’s lawsuit against the state Senate alleging racism in that body’s vote to void her election will have profound and unwelcome repercussions for Rep. Harold Ford Jr.’s run for the U.S. Senate.

Ford sued the state Senate last week after a largely partisan vote to kick her out of office based on irregularities in the close election.

Ford got to run that race because her brother, former Sen. John Ford, resigned in the wake of his indictment in the FBI’s Tennessee Waltz sting.

Rep. Ford was already battling the perception that his uncle is crooked as he tries to build statewide support for his U.S. Senate bid. Now he also has to overcome his aunt’s fight with the GOP.

In a largely “red” state, Rep. Ford has to be pretty blue right now.

This race kind of scares me - the GOP has what three guys in the primary while the Dems have rallied against one. I really hope we retain this seat - bad enough we have to worry about OH, PA and now Montana.

"The 'rats have pinned most of their future hopes on Ford and Obama."

Can you just imagine the hate/smear campaign that would be in full swing against Obama, as a recovering junkie, if he were a Republican?

Just look at the "drunk" smears against President Bush based on his having been stopped for driving tipsy on a back road on a Saturday night in his twenties.

Sadly, if the more conservative Senate candidate gets the primary nod, I can picture the RINOs staying home or voting Ford. More likely the former.

They were willing to support LAMAR! for Senator but not Bryant and voted Dem in the Governor's race.

Bryant's chances were taken away not by those of us in Tennessee but rather the micro-management in DC. Remember Fred hadn't yet to utter the words before DC had crown Lamar as heir to the throne. It went down hill from there as Washington namely the White house and RNC threw support behind Alexander before the primaries.

Hey I gladly voted for Bryant I knew Goober in the flannel shirt was not a good choice. His time as governor looked great only because of who he had replaced. Much like our current Governor looks good compared to Taxquist despite the fact he's a DEM. Lamar's conduct after office left a lot to be desired IMO.

You underestimate the Tennessee Red Neck vote.

Frodo will carry Memphis and Nashville, but I don't believe he'll get another county. The East will go solid for the GOP as will most of Middle and West TN. Too many still remember stories from Reconstruction days even though the parties have switched. Sad but true.

I am a born-again Conservative. I was raised in a "pull the lever, straight Demo ticket" household. I can assure you, through years of experience, that this vote is not a racial issue.

It's all about "the Benjamins" and the black hole of black crime. Let just one of them rise above the "ongoing suspect" test and see all hell NOT break loose.

My comment here is this...The time is long past whenever someone mentions race as a factor in anything at all. Race+ Katrina is the "Franking Stamp Method" of absolving criminals through natural disaster.

Did the "criminals" stay in NO to loot after a predicted hurricane? Oh, helllllllllllloooooooooooo, ...you dumba**es, these people are CRIMINALS. GOT IT? CRIMINALS.

Maybe Pa and Mont. But not Ohio. hackett is making such an ash hole of himself that THE Whine will clear the bar. Tenn. is rolling right in national races and lil harrie is too liberal for middle or east Tennessee. Besides we'll take sheets seat in West Virginia and maybe Cantwell's in Washington. Montana's GOP is rallying around Burns and he will benefit from running with Denny Rehberg who polls very high.

I think you're thinking about Pappy. Pappy did have a chip on his shoulders as well as prosecutors for a lot of his career. Pappy was indicted in the Butcher Brothers Banking Failures & Scandals of the early 1980's. When The Clintons got in the White House in 93 the prosecutors were called off. Ford SR never did a day over it.

As for Junior? I've never heard him in the context you mention. Character wise he is probably the better of the family but I would not vote for him.

Ford SR & JR got elected to congress because of his district. He can't carry the rest of the state I doubt he could carry Nashville for that matter. He would not carry East Tennessee.

When asked if there
was anything beyond marijuana in his past, Obama said, "That'll
suffice." But the book includes a passage in which Obama discusses how
he dealt with questions from his mother when he was 17 and a senior in
high school. The context of the book also makes clear that he was
trying to deal with the problems his race presented.

"I had learned not to care," he wrote. "I blew a few smoke rings,
remembering those years. Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little
blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though. ..."

I wouldn't worry about Tennessee, Ohio or Montana. However, Pennsylvania may be a bit of a problem. But, just today, Casey pissed off his pro-choice base with his endorsement of Judge Alito. Even though Casey if pro life, this was "rubbing it in", and the pro choice lesbians in Pennsylvania are very angry.

Actually, I think the democRATS have far more to worry about, especially in New Jersey, and Maryland. Also, Washington State and Michigan are far from shoe-ins for the democRATS. If all the chips fall into place, the GOP may actually pick up 2 or 3 Senate seats in November!!

I could not believe the polling in NJ having Kean up by double digits i have high hopes for that one. I also heard that we are at the very least competitive in Minnesotta as well. I just hope that the stars align right and we miraculously actually expand our majority (i know i know wishful thinking but a man can dream can he not :))
