TEHRAN - Iran's defence minister hit back Wednesday at veiled Israeli threats of an attack, saying Iran and its allies could put the Jewish state "in an eternal coma" like that of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
"Israel does not have the courage to attack Iran, and if it commits such a big mistake, the defenders of Islamic Iran will put Israel in an eternal coma like Sharon," Mostafa Mohammad Najjar was quoted as saying by state television.
Najjar branded the United States and Israel as the "Great and Little Satan, who are using psychological wars to intimidate Iran." The United States has been branded the "Great Satan" since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
The two countries are among a number that suspect Tehran of using its civilian atomic energy programme to hide efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Washington is pressing for Iran to be hauled before the UN Security Council.
Iran, a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, says its nuclear programme is legal under the NPT and merely designed to meet its energy needs.
Israeli Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said Saturday that Israel, widely believed to possess nuclear arms, would not tolerate a "a nuclear option" for Iran, but reaffirmed his commitment to diplomacy over the escalating crisis.
"We are giving priority at this stage to diplomatic action ... but in any case we cannot tolerate a nuclear option for Iran and we must prepare ourselves," the Iranian-born Mofaz said.
But Najjar said the "vigilance of the Iranian people, regional and global nations will defuse their sinister plans against humanity."
Israel and Iran are arch-enemies, with Tehran refusing to acknowledge the Jewish state's right to exist. Tension between them has grown recently over a string of outbursts by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamadinejad, including a call for Israel to be "wiped off the map."
He has an Al Qaeda trick up his sleeve.
You're SO insensitive. :-)
I don't believe in coincidences. That's all I'm going to say about this whole matter.
someone set him up the bomb..
Here's my short list:
Bill Clinton
Hillary Clinton
Harry Reid
John F Kerry
Ted "Swimmer" Kennedy
Al Gore
Doesn't have the imagery of driving Israel into the sea. Iran may be running out of metaphor.
Here they are, sitting on a sea of oil, and telling the world they need nuclear power ... we need a break.
That's because the President looked into Putin's soul and found someone he could work with.
He was had.

It's not quite that simple. If Russia had not supplied the reactor to Iran, then China or Pakistan probably would have built the reactor for them. I doubt that Russia wants a nuclear-armed Iran either, so there is much more going on here than meets the eye.
The last clear example was a European named Schickelgruber...

Is Baghdad Bob employed by Iran nowadays?
Actually, Pakistan (nuke technology from Abdul Qadeer Khan) and China (through their proxy client North Korea missile components) have played major roles in making Iran nuke capable; however, it is the Russians who have been the major player here and the analogy to the 1962 Cubam Missile Crisis is quite striking. The threat to America and Israel from Iran's nukes is as great or greater than what Castro's threat was in 1962. Why? The Soviets controlled Castro and had full control over the nukes. Russia will not have that kind of control over Iran's nukes--little to none.
I state that the threat is greater from Iran today (near future) than it was from Cuba/Castro in 1962 for this reason.
Khruschev was edgy but he was not a madman like Iran's whacko is.
The common thread is the Russians today in Iran and with Cuba in 1962. The difference is unlike JFK, Bush will not be upfront with the Americans about Russia's role as JFK was about the Soviets' role.
China's day isn't coming for at least a decade. Iran's day is only months away, if not weeks.
How close are we to seeing Jesse Jackson speaking to us from Tehran, do you suppose?
about 2 months
I figured mid-March, so that's about right.
