MANY IN LA., TEXAS LAMENT RITA 'AMNESIA'

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -- A steady procession of congressmen and U.S. senators have visited the Gulf Coast this month, inspecting Hurricane Katrina damage. But they didn't show up here, one of the places devastated by Hurricane Rita, Louisiana's "other" storm.

Four months after Rita caused $4.7 billion in damage, people in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas say they're concerned the storm has been erased from the country's memory, overshadowed by Katrina's assault on New Orleans. While New Orleanians fret about "Katrina fatigue," people here say they've been victims of "Rita amnesia."

My husband and I went down to SW LA in October and helped with the recovery. It was bad down there.

It's all about New Orleans....the city that thought it was immune to hurricanes (other than the drink).

But Katrina was a Chocolate storm. Rita was more shrimp gumbo. That's why.

We South Floridians are pretty much hardy when it comes to hurricane recovery.

Even though the month-long power loss for the 3 Big Counties (Palm Beach, Dade & Broward) was tough for many too acclimated to it, JESUS took good care of us all.

Thank you for your time and effort in helping out down there. I took a tractor and trailer down to Silsbee, TX and helped clear some large fallen trees. It was really bad around Beaumont as well.

I was working in a shelter in Baton Rouge when Rita hit. A couple of days later we got bus loads of people coming in from the Lake Charles area just as I was leaving to go back to the staff shelter. I ended up sticking around to help register them in. One thing I do have to say about people from Louisiana, they are sure polite.

I worked in the French Quarter for several years and everyone knew it was a flood disaster waiting to happen.

That's what I have always heard. It's been a while since Texas and SW Louisiana were slammed by a major storm but they seemed to handle it fairly well.

I guess I should revise my previous statement to say SE Texas seemed to handling the situation well. I too have not heard much from SW Louisiana except for what trashcanbred has told us.

What the LSM overlooks is that Democrats get much of their Texas support from the Houston area.

The strange thing about Wilma is that it totally disrupted life down here in South Florida for at least a couple of weeks yet almost nothing about this was reported in the national media. Fortunately, most of the damage was loss of electricity and damaged roofs but there was incredible DISRUPTION down here for that period.

Someone said Katrina had a sister called Rita...... Or at least that's what I'm told as I continue to wait for insurance settlements to begin rebuilding my home.

Thanks for helping the folks.... A huge amount of debri has been removed but there is still a lot to go. Some of the area will see many small businesses gone not to be rebuilt. Most of the major retail shopping centers are back now but there are still some that are in the rebuilding stages. Blue roofs will be here for a lot longer I'm afraid.
