Happens all the time. Why, I myself know of quite a few cases where the lower part is more advanced than the upper, and so does everyone else here. Think of bill or hillary.

Giant platypus, maybe? I understand they are also oviparous, yet are considered to be mammalian (they produce milk-like secretions from their bellies).

It'll be interesting if these fossils are in fact authentic. China has a history of being the source of paleontological hoaxes...

I'll go for it being an egg-laying shrew.

Li Gang reasoned that the mammal finished synchronized evolution for both its upper part and lower part a long time ago. However, for some special survival need it had to let its evolved lower part to "retrogress" into a more primitive state. Data must be interpreted in such a way so as to support the Theory. That's science. Perhaps the findings can can be peer reviewed by the Lancet -- they accept anything.

Retrograde evolution? That thing needs one of them there reverse beepers, lol.

whoops, animal doesn't fit current family tree...invent something called retrogression and don't worry about it...if we find something later, we can always go to inverted retrogression....

I'll believe it when a South Korean or Norwegian team confirms it.
