Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has chosen David A. Paterson, a powerful Harlem state senator, to be his running mate in the 2006 governor's race, advisers to Mr. Spitzer said yesterday. But the selection stunned and angered some influential black Democrats, who had favored another candidate and had not been consulted on the choice.
After considering a university president, a Wall Street executive and others to run for lieutenant governor, Mr. Spitzer offered the job a week ago to Mr. Paterson, the Senate minority leader, and Mr. Paterson accepted, the advisers said. The Spitzer camp portrayed the choice as a master stroke: Mr. Paterson, 51, is popular among Democrats and respected by Republicans. He has a record on government reform and a compelling life story as a black and legally blind man who has overcome obstacles.
The unusually early selection of a candidate for lieutenant governor carries political benefits and risks for Mr. Spitzer. While Mr. Paterson is a widely admired candidate, he would give the Democratic ticket more of a New York City cast than the party usually likes. It could also portend a political shift in the Senate with the loss of Mr. Paterson from a crucial legislative leadership role as the Senate grapples with a new era of power after 12 years of Republican rule under Gov. George E. Pataki.
Mr. Spitzer's choice sent huge ripples through the state's political leadership and unleashed surprising criticism from some fellow Democrats, exposing tensions between the younger and older generations in black Democratic politics in New York.
At a breakfast at the Four Seasons yesterday, for instance, Mr. Spitzer shocked Representative Charles B. Rangel and Percy E. Sutton - two elder statesmen of the famed Harlem Clubhouse - with his choice of Mr. Paterson, the two men said. They have a...

Shouldn't he, like, get the nomination first?
Then what's he doing associating with Eliot Spizter?
Digging for a Subway, but Hitting a Wall, Again
FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.
Exactly what I was thinking. Spitzer is New York's version of Hugo Chavez. And unfortunately he will be elected Governor in a landslide.
I'm glad the paper added the qualifer "of the famed Harlem Clubhous" after calling Rangel an "elder statesmem"....
Rangel has been revealing his ignorance and race baiting style for too long to be thought of as a "statesman"..
Semper Fi
Talk about Democrats getting what they deserve...
"Then what's he doing associating with Eliot Spizter?"
Lt.Gov. is a step up from being Minority Leader, and a great way to move to a state-wide "stand alone" office.
Better question, if they Democrats think they can sew up the Senate Majority in two-four years, why give up being Majority Leader. This makes me think that the Democrats don't think it's realistic to take the Senate.
That was my reaction too. But NY politics is byzantine. They don't like to have primary fights, but the potential is always there. They would rather have backroom deals.
Eliot Spitzer...given that name alone must have driven him to a shrill and high-strung drive to revenge, even though his first enemy was himself. Yeah, make him Governor. Right.
PS- Please put me on your Ping List!
I think it was witty.
Spitzer is the poster boy for Atlas Shrugged.
"And unfortunately he will be elected Governor in a landslide."
I think it may work for the better to have Spitzer. New York is already on the edge on taxes and it's anti-business attitude. A few years of the Spitzer machine and I can only imagine what a hellhole will be left.
FIRE THEM ALL!
(oh wait, this isn't the TWU thread...sorry.)

The Spitzer Team logo...the PANDER BEAR!
Note the ubiquitous totally clueless Liberal expression!
Actually, it's a pretty shrewd choice. In any event, I don't see Republicans winning this election.
