We are probably alone, within the Milky Way anyway. There is abundant life out there, but it is all microbes. So says Brownlee, lead scientist of the recently landed comet dust return mission, Stardust.

Some lichens could very well survive Mars, but their growth rates are so slow that you'd have to wait more than 75 years.
