It's the American dream -- buying a home for your family. And now you don't have to be in the country legally to own one.
Wells Fargo is first major California lender to offer home loans to illegal immigrants, 10News reported.
"We're not required to ask the immigration status of any of our customers. That is the responsibility of the federal government," Wells Fargo bank representative Jerry Ruiz said.
The program is called "Celebrate Home" and Wells Fargo says it complies with all federal regulations, 10News reported.
Applicants do need a tax identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service for people who do not have Social Security numbers.
Ruiz said the program is targeted to Wells Fargo customers who have been an account holder for at least six months and who can show proof of residency for two years in the United States -- along with proof that they have filed and reported income taxes using an individual taxpayer identification number.
There are an estimated 10 to 12 million illegal workers in the United States.
Critics say even though the program is legal, it sends the wrong message.
"Any time you have a bank institution lending money to help people buy homes when they're not even allowed to be in the country, it is something that runs contrary to the law. It aids and abets people who are breaking the law," said Ira Melman of the Federation of Immigration Reform.
A bill is being introduced in Congress that would make it illegal to issue loans to illegal immigrants, according to 10News.
If the writers of the Fourteenth Amendment were smart enough to know that the children of diplomats could not become citizens simply because they were born in our territory, don't you think perhaps they were smart enough to not consider the children of illegal invaders citizens of this great country.
You're a dolt, as I said.
"Exactly why would you prove "residency" when you are not a legal resident. The whole program appears to be on solid quicksand."
Exactly the same foundation material that our economy on.
So, um, let me get this right... you're OK with this? And you think it's ok to be in this country illegally and have the ability to purchase a home on a 40 year note? What are *you* on? And most Legal Hispanic Populations can bank wherever they choose because they have proper documents! Maybe I'm confused.
I see you tagline, and good luck throwing every politician out of office (hasn't worked so well with David Drier or John Campbell : )
There's a measure on the floor right now to take away Birthright Citizenship. We are the last nation on the earth that does it. *feh*
"Just what happens when our undocumented friends end up underwater on their mortgage and flee back to buena Mexico? I'm betting Wells Fargo won't be stuck with the tab."
What tab? - this is a home loan, secured by a house. Wells Fargo simply forcloses, takes all the equity for themselves, and resells. A nice scam.
However, WF is scum for doing this - it's like saying "Hey, it's not my job to help put my neighbor's house fire out - that's the job of the city fire department".
Maybe they are counting on a huge populist uprising where all the illegals are thrown out - then they will own all the houses the illegals used to live in?
the 14th Amendment include children of SLAVES BROUGHT ILLEGALLY TO THE U.S. so perhaps you should brush up on your history before posting - Bush and Alito certainly do have an opinion (as does brother Jeb in Florida ; )
You shall see soon enough.
I'll permit clawrence3 to answer the question. He certainly knows more about how to slide around the very laws that I advocate enforcement of.
clawrence3, why not take a shot at Post #72 and explain just how illegals do get by these small impediments that we call laws.
I an only imagine what they will give them as far as interest rates are concerned.
So just what part of this program *is* legal? And not in Mexifornia either, but let's say.... North Dakota? Show me your evidence that it is legal and just, and I might let up.
Why am I not surprised you're associating yourself with them...
Lady Liberty would have to extinguish her lamp on such a day . . .
Perhaps same reason I know the history behind the 14th Amendment?
Wells Fargo is a "gay friendly" bank too.
Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Your gloating speaks volumes about you.
Yeah... I know. I'd like to know precisely *what* federal guidelines this does comply with? And why saying - oh, that's for the feds to work out? I'm going to create fliers and distribute them ... wait, no, that's free advertising down here!
Y0... master of the cut & paste... Shooooooooosh! We heard you the first 5 times. And you know what, you obviously don't live in a border town. Try visiting one on the US side and see what the illegals have done to it. Get a clue.
22% APR - paid in wads of dirty, sweaty cash every month at the Wells Fargo inside Safeway or Albertson's...whatever is left goes for Miller High Life 12 packs...
