It's the American dream -- buying a home for your family. And now you don't have to be in the country legally to own one.
Wells Fargo is first major California lender to offer home loans to illegal immigrants, 10News reported.
"We're not required to ask the immigration status of any of our customers. That is the responsibility of the federal government," Wells Fargo bank representative Jerry Ruiz said.
The program is called "Celebrate Home" and Wells Fargo says it complies with all federal regulations, 10News reported.
Applicants do need a tax identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service for people who do not have Social Security numbers.
Ruiz said the program is targeted to Wells Fargo customers who have been an account holder for at least six months and who can show proof of residency for two years in the United States -- along with proof that they have filed and reported income taxes using an individual taxpayer identification number.
There are an estimated 10 to 12 million illegal workers in the United States.
Critics say even though the program is legal, it sends the wrong message.
"Any time you have a bank institution lending money to help people buy homes when they're not even allowed to be in the country, it is something that runs contrary to the law. It aids and abets people who are breaking the law," said Ira Melman of the Federation of Immigration Reform.
A bill is being introduced in Congress that would make it illegal to issue loans to illegal immigrants, according to 10News.
Not every home loan requires a traditional credit history - you gonna make those illegal too?!
The comparison was between a Norweigian traitor and the U.S. Govt. Go back through the posts ya quisling and quit twisting crap around to suit you.
Please cite even ONE law you think Wells Fargo violated.
Sure they welcome them...with a mortgage rate of 20% or more.
Failure to report a crime. Specifically, someone they know good and well is in the country illegaly.
Let's assume that 60-80% of Americans think this immoral. Let's assume that 20% of Americans are disgusted in this and willing to act. Such a loss could be potential. Given that most Americans have been here longer and have larger savings (due to higher education rates/inheritance), it would have a much bigger effect. Boycotts are one of the most effective methods we have for these kind of situations.
Morals first, laws second.
Now a website specifically for this would be good. Any webmaster here? My thought are you have a website on businesses that support illegal immigration, and you get voluntarys to hand out fliers everyones and a while; just to get the message that these place don't deserve our business.
Thoughts?
You weren't even involved in that post, so why don't you mind your own business?
They are not securing their loans, I'm glad I saw this article, I'm pulling all my money from them.
Yes, my thought was (and remains): a boycott is certainly your prerogative - good luck with that.
A 'This Stinks' Ping! (A certain la la land sister of mine banks with Wells Fargo and has her mortgage through them.) ;o)
I can't stop talking about this. I am helping an elderly relative obtain prescription benefits from the Medicare plan. On the websites of the insurance companies there are instructions for non English speaking people to go to the Spanish web page to learn all about their new prescription drug bill. Give me a break! They can't speak English, have come here illegally and have never paid into Social Security, but yet our idiot government is giving them prescription drug benefits.
As Lou Dobbs says almost every night, "Our politicians are crazy!" I go him one better, our politicians are liars, traitors and have sold America out.
LOL - it is NOT a failure to report a crime if you have no duty or way of knowing they are illegal aliens.
Why don't you mind your own business? You weren't involved in the post you responded to me in the first place.
Well, bully for you - good luck with sending Mexico an invoice then.
Yes, you told us that already.
How many illegal immigrants with 2 years residency afford a California Home?
But yet, that's what everyone is doing, particularly on the Left side of the house. I mean... um, we all know how that ended. Badly.
