It's the American dream -- buying a home for your family. And now you don't have to be in the country legally to own one.
Wells Fargo is first major California lender to offer home loans to illegal immigrants, 10News reported.
"We're not required to ask the immigration status of any of our customers. That is the responsibility of the federal government," Wells Fargo bank representative Jerry Ruiz said.
The program is called "Celebrate Home" and Wells Fargo says it complies with all federal regulations, 10News reported.
Applicants do need a tax identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service for people who do not have Social Security numbers.
Ruiz said the program is targeted to Wells Fargo customers who have been an account holder for at least six months and who can show proof of residency for two years in the United States -- along with proof that they have filed and reported income taxes using an individual taxpayer identification number.
There are an estimated 10 to 12 million illegal workers in the United States.
Critics say even though the program is legal, it sends the wrong message.
"Any time you have a bank institution lending money to help people buy homes when they're not even allowed to be in the country, it is something that runs contrary to the law. It aids and abets people who are breaking the law," said Ira Melman of the Federation of Immigration Reform.
A bill is being introduced in Congress that would make it illegal to issue loans to illegal immigrants, according to 10News.

If someone with better access, contacts, etc. can find and figure how to deduct all of the illegal aliens in Federal & state prisons & city & county jails plus the number of violent & other crimes : murders, rapes, kidnappings, assaults, robberies, carjackings, etc. - from the individual and total crime & prison stats - I am positive that Americn blacks & of hispanic blood would see that illegal aliens are multiplying the crime stats that are blamed on USA minorities

Accepting a phony ID is a federal offense?! Wells Fargo says they are complying with all federal guidelines, so perhaps you have the specific cite to this law you allege was violated or the federal government allows said ID for home loans (just like employers are not required to verify whether IDs are valid or not)? Do you really want banks to start enforcing other federal laws, immigration or how about drug laws - no one can get a home loan until they test negative for illegal drugs?
What, like some conspiracy law - I will ask you if you want banks to test loan applicants for illegal drugs prior to approval as well?

This is insane. I am in the mortgage business, and have yet to come across an illegal.
This should be prosecutable.
There needs to be legislation that if you lend money to an illegal, you're fined the exact amount of however much you lent.

Feel free to write your Congressman is support of such legislation. Until then, however, there is nothing illegal about what Wells Fargo is doing.

O.K., whatever - perhaps those lurkers will see the strawman argument you set up above about "Fraternal German brothers" taking over the government in Norway and realize no illegal (or even naturalized) alien can be elected President without changing the U.S. Constitution.
