Lemieux expected to retire
By Kim Lyons TRIBUNE-REVIEW Tuesday, January 24, 2006
Penguins owner and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux is expected to retire today for the second time. Lemieux, 40, will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. at Mellon Arena to make the announcement, officials said.
The league's No. 7 all-time scorer has not played since Dec. 16, when he was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.
In 1993, Lemieux was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, which he beat. He scored a goal and assist after his final chemotherapy treatment, which further added to his mystique.

Every time I see that name, I think of Lemiwinks, the South Park a&&-hamster.

To quote Mr. Slave,

Mario is one great guy, and the greatest goal scorer than anyone...... but if G.W. gets a third Supreme Court nominee ............ he's right up there as a great goal scorer.
Retire? Again?
and a great republican...has had many fundraisers for santorum, bush...
He's probably especially happy that the Tories won last night.
A quality gentleman and a great player. He will be missed by all hockey fans.
I saw where Wayne Gretzky's uncle, Al, ran as a Conservative in the recent Canadian elections; alas, he lost.
I cannot see how any one associated with hockey could be a democrat.
I can't either, but I know on one of the popular Blackhawks message boards there were quite a few of them. It seems odd to me.
I guess it had to happen.
Mario, I think, gave it a go this year after getting Crosby, hoping for a good post-lockout year to build solid support for a new arena.
Though an arena deal doesn't look good look good right now. Rendell is screwing everybody to favor his slots buddy.
The new Sports Complex has a good chance. Look here-

Great player, and the second biggest crybaby in NHL history (the first is Jeremy Roenick).
Mario returning to the ice was always a publicity stunt, but let's face it, even he couldn't play at the pace the game is now moving at. Talent cannot always hide age.
As far as an irregular heartbeat, I'm begining to wonder about the use of steroids in the NHL. In the past couple of years, we've seen a lot of weird stuff on the ice (Jiri Fischer's seizure, the infamous Bertuzzi hit, the Matt Johnson/Jeff Beukeboom incident, etc) that gets me to thinking. After all, these guys are bigger, stronger and faster then they've ever been before, and somewhat more vicious than in past years. It leads me to believe that some of the nastier stuff that has taken place could be attributed to 'roid rage or the use of 'roids.
Think about it; Mario suddenly has a heart condition that heretofore was undetected? Mario returns to the ice after recovering from Hodgkin's Disease? You have to wonder.
And of course, the politicians in Pittsburgh have screwed the Penguins royally. They agreed to build a new arena when Mario took the team over, but haven't done a thing. They've built new stadiums for the Steelers and the Pirates, but there isn't any money to build a new Igloo despite there being a written agreement to do so.
Pittsburgh Penguins fans, btw, are the worst bunch of fair-weather band-wagon jumpers ever.
wow...
I can't actually remember watching hockey and not hearing about or watching Lemiuex on the ice....
he's leaving...
Yzerman is most likely leaving...
Andreychuk is already out there...
Hull has retired....
you wonder how much longer Broduer and Chelios have....
There is quite a generation of Hockey players that will be leaving the game in the next 2 years....
Bite me!
"Bite me!"
Did I also mention that Penguins fans are also known for the eloquence, maturity and thought-provoking argumentative style?
Jiri Fischer has a known heart condition that was diagnosed in 2002 and caused him to have a seizure. And yes, people do have heart conditions and don't know it. Are you implying that Mario's heart condition and cancer were steroids related? That's quite a stretch and a very serious implication.
