General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?
General Jack D. Ripper: Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.
General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence.

It's a communist plot to sully our precious bodily fluids!

Seriously though, I've never understood the concept of adding flouride to water to prevent tooth decay.

Why not leave the water alone and add flouride to sugar?

It occurred to me the other day that perhaps Floride is effective as a decay-preventive toothpaste because the residue prevents the growth of bacteria on your toothbrush. If so, the same effect could be achieved through the use of Barbicide or some other sanitizing agent.

Wouldn't that be a kick in the teeth?

Finally this is gaining traction! As a school nurse, I used to have to provide this rinse to my kids. I refused, so the dental clinic had to find a volunteer to do it!

I lead a team of Air Force Specialist who inspected DEW Line radar sites. Frequently I would meet up with a retired Army chaplain who was bringing Christ to these remote sites.

Chappie, as he was known, grew up on a ranch west of San Antonio and began dipping snuff when he was 12! He always carried a coffee can and had his tin of snuff in his shirt. He had this ritual when he was going to "dip". He would extract the tin from his shirt, drum his fingers on it, bang it against his elbows, knees and then toss it in the air. It would land in his hand and he would pop the lid, pinch the snuff and place it between his lip and teeth. Quite the display.

One night we were talking about his snuff usage and he said that every year when he was home in San Antonio he would schedule his physical, (he was 72) at Brooks Hospital! He said that his condition amazed the dentists since he had never had a cavity and the docs attributed it to the tobacco juice!

Go figger!

'Course I wouldn't want my daughter dippin'!

I got a study from my state a couple of years ago. I forget the exact numbers right now, but approx. half of the counties in the state had more flouride naturally occuring in the groundwater than is added artificially in other places. There were a couple of counties that had high enough flouride to cause stained teeth. It makes me wonder about the all the fuss.

Does this mean the left has inherited the ancient fluoride issue? Will we see Greenpeace start bombing water purification plants?

We have well water and my pediatrician asked if we wanted to get flouride drops 4 years ago. I said no. Now the dentist is after us. I have been telling them no too. Thank goodness I researched this earlier, but it is always nice to get confirmation of the decision, this is overwhelming though.

But the politics of organized dentistry

Sounds like a good basis for a Monty Python skit involving roving gangs of dentists.

One of my grand daughters had a problem with her teeth not developing the enamel properly. Fluoride treatments did help, however, the warnings on the bottle included not letting children swallow the stuff.

I question the use of fluoride in the water, simply because there is little contact time with the teeth, and significantly more with other tissues.

After an admittedly cursory examination into this seemingly bizarre conspiracy theory, it has been my experience that many of the studies that the advocates of this conspiracy cite don't state that fluoridation is "bad", rather that in certain areas, it may not be necessary, because in some areas there are already naturally occurring fluoride ions. These studies conclusions about the toxic effects of overconsumption (not the mere consumption, but OVERconsumption) of fluoride (something no MD, DMD or DDS would disagree with) are then based on that fact.

That is, it's true that overconsumption of fluoride is detrimental. No one disputes that. However in areas where there is no naturally occurring fluoride, there are positive effects to adding fluoride that greatly outweigh any (diminished) negative effects.

On a more personal note, my father is a dentist and I take it as a rather personal insult that by extension, my father must be engaged in a "commie conspiracy" by advocating water fluoridation. I'm just happy that FR is so large, we actually have some other dentists that come to such threads, and debunk such myths.

It's issues like these, issues that reject science because science isn't understood by the layman, that are an embarrassment to conservatives everywhere. It's the same objection I have to the "intelligent design/creation" foolishness that's headlining in recent news. Not an attempt to hijack the thread into that debate, but rather to point out that not all science is "evil", nor, just because the average person doesn't understand it, doesn't mean it should be rejected.
