Pelosi Statement on President’s Comments on Raid on Student Aid
Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to President Bush’s claim during a question and answer session following his speech at Kansas State University that student aid is not being cut:
“President Bush’s comments today clearly show how out of touch he is with the needs of America’s students. In their budget, President Bush and Congressional Republicans have once again put the special interests ahead of our nation’s future by raiding student aid with a $12.7 billion cut. Increasing the cost of student loans will put higher education even further out of reach or heap mountains of debt onto too many of our nation’s students.
“Democrats have a better idea that will not force hard-working students to pay the price for the Republican culture of corruption that favors special interest over the needs of America’s children.”

Well, if the cost of going to college is out of reach, I'm pretty sure Uncle Sam is still hiring. I used the GI bill to help me get through college. Why do these Dems think they are owed everything without having to sacrifice?

Of course, 'broken record' is one of those phrases that is clearly destined to end up in the trash heap once the bulk of the populace has never touched or heard of a 'record', let alone a 'broken' one...
But, but, but... students who feel like they're entitled to federal government aid to get through college are a special interest. That's exactly what a special interest is, Nan.

Was it a real cut or was it that the increase wasn't as big as the Rats wanted?

I believe it was a real cut. I thought student aid was part of that $30billion something across the board cut. So, why is Bush saying it wasn't cut?
That's why I am doubting it was a real cut. Although it's entirely possible that since the president doesn't do the cutting, the Congress does, that this one program escaped the president's notice.

I did some googling on this subject and it looks like it wasn't an actual cut, but a cut of the subsidy to private lenders that make the loans.
Doesn't mean the money will not be there, just might be harder to get and more expensive to pay back.
I'm still looking though.
The new legislation also raises interest rates on Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students to a fixed 8.5 percent from a variable rate currently set at 6.1 percent, the Journal said. Also known as PLUS loans, these loans are granted to parents rather than students.
