Bush on 'Brokeback,' Didn't See, Can't Tell
LA Times (Media Pornographers) ^ | 1/23/06 | By Peter Wallsten, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON -- President Bush has long cultivated the image of a macho rancher, frequently donning his boots and Wrangler jeans to clear brush on his sprawling Texas property. But he was decidedly noncommittal today — and even a bit nonplused — when asked for his reaction to the most talked-about ranching film in years: "Brokeback Mountain."

"I hadn't seen it," Bush told thousands of students and professors at Kansas State University, responding to a query from an audience member. "I'd be glad to talk about ranching, but I haven't seen the movie."

The movie, featuring the love story of two gay cowboys, this month won the Golden Globe award for best motion picture drama and top honors from the Producers Guild of America and is showing remarkable success — even in conservative, red-state towns and cities that helped reelect Bush.

But if Bush intends to see it, he showed no such desire today when the young man in the crowd raised the idea toward the end of a lengthy, unscripted and unexpected question-and-answer session.

---

"You would love it," the questioner persisted. "You should check it out."

My hand was shook by JFK in a receiving line 2 months before he was killed but I would trade that for your experience. :o) BTW, JFK looked better in person than on tv/pictures - he reeked of vitality.

"BBM = a gay movie...promoted by conservatives through their outrage."

Hey, they've convinced me to see it! That Heath Ledger has been deemed "oscar worthy" by all commentators, and I've only read the outraged conservatives. Oh yeah, and the guy at The New Yorker, I THINK it was Anthony Lane, uncharacteristically tongue-tied. No Pun!

Well, I'll try to watch it, anyway, at least it will be in the privacy of my own home.

I predicted that a woman will soon be looking to make it with two guys, not for the attention they pay to her, but to give her visual stimulation. Women used to have dignity and self respect, that is on its way out, in the young.

Why do they keep calling them cowboys, when they are actually sheep herders?

I'm an old Texan, let me 'splain a few things about "cowboy wear":

The jeans are made thick and tough to withstand the rides that a cowboy has to do. Small mesquite trees will cut through any normal cloth, jeans are tough and thick, plus they are usually covered by chaps, a set of leather covers. Hence, jeans are used for the utility of work. Jeans are also soft on the inside and tough on the outside, better for the rider.

Next, the boots: Boots are designed for two different purposes. One for ground contact roping, and one for riding.

The "roper" had a flatter heal and a short "cuff". It's made to perform tasks on the ground, it's like a walking boot. Hence the term roper. Roping from a ground position, as in branding or "calving". The riding, or "Cowboy boot" is a thing of beauty and functionality, if you are a cowboy.

The "rider": Notice that the rider has a much taller "cuff" a much higher heal, a tapered toe, and a notch on the bottom of the boot on the instep that extends outward in a sculptured design. All this is for purpose and functionality.

First, the "cuff" (the part of the boot that goes up your leg). This is there to protect the cowboy from the mesquite bushes, the cactus, and any other things that could cut his legs while he is working with cattle...functional and always work under the jean cuff for extra protection.

Second, the tapered toe of the boot. Easily slips into the stirrup of the saddle.

Third, the tapered notch on the instep of the boot. It fits into the contour of the saddle stirrups, perfectly, they are all made alike, stirrups and boots.

Fourth, the high heel of the boot stops the boot, and foot, from going forward out of the stirrup holding the cowboy's foot in perfect position for control of the horse.

This has been the design for hundreds of years, and it works today. It may be fashionable to wear them or not to meterosexuals but cowboys have done it for hundreds of years.

If you get a good pair of boots and break them in just right, you can sleep in them and wake up refreshed. A good pair of boots can last you a long, long time. Of course, you get what you pay for. $100 boots are good, $200 boots are better, but you can get a great pair of boots for what you want to pay. Leather is better than fancy skins because it breaks in better and lasts longer. Cowboys know this, ask one where he buys his.

There you have it. It has nothing to do with "style" it has to do with comfort and utility.

O-Kay....So the President clears brush and is from Texas. Since when is it a rite of passage a Texan "Cowboy", as they refer to him, watch a movie about gay lovers? Anyone at the LAT see the absurdity? I suppose John Wayne wasn't qualified to play in Westerns because he didn't play a gay guy. [sarcasm]

The only ones pushing the idea of this movie as a tremendous success are the media and those with a stake in its success.

I don't hear anyone talking about this movie, other than to make fun of it.

And, btw, what are they? I thought they were gay sheepherders. Then the media tags them gay coyboys. Now they are gay ranchers? LOL

"Why were they laughing at Bush's answer? I don't understand what was so funny."

Exactly. It was a question by some smart-ass college-kid to get attention and to embarrass the President. The 'joke' was that he got the President to take him seriously. This, to some, is funny.

I was proud of the President for refusing to this fool's level. He's been suffering the abuse of fools for a long time now. And he won this one.

my daughter said.."but dad, they're so hot"!

That seems to be a trend lately-- straight women who find male homosex exciting. Some of them even watch gay porno movies nowadays, I hear.

I guess it is the flip side of how men have frequently perceived lesbianism, or at least lesbianism among good-looking women.

Who is that?

That was someone auditioning on American Idol last week. Appx. 18 years old, dresses like girl, acts like a girl, wears hair like a girl, has a girl's voice, claims to be male.

Fortunately, it was a lousy singer, so we don't have to see it again during the competition.

Nah, I really don't think that's what she meant. I don't think she enjoyed the guys "together"..rather their rugged look and nice faces and the fact that they were "cowboys". It's the whole country music thing that's so popular now among colleges across the entire county, even here in the Northeast. At least I'm hoping!
