Because there is really no such thing as an atheist. All humans have a spiritual make-up and a lot of so-called atheists "protest too much", IMHO.

I would think it's because they are unsure, and in their unsuredness, need to reinforce the same onto anyone who will listen.

Once you know the truth, nothing will ever replace it.

Puritan: Someone who can't stand that someone, somewhere might be having fun.

Liberal: Someone who can't stand that someone, somewhere doesn't think the same way they do.

In a reasonable world, the ACLU lawyers trying to erase historical
signs of the crucifix would be diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive
disorder fixated on lines intersecting at right angles.
I don't know how they manage to drive through a modern city and
not go crazy looking at some of the "big box" plate glass skyscrapers
(nothing but "crosses" in the frames holding the glasses).

Because, in their minds, he obstructs human progress. Of course, what they fail to understand, is that humans have not "progressed" at all. Technology has, but man has not. Furthermore, progression assumes some final goal, something to progress to, which in turn implies an absolute standard, which in turn implies a higher authority who put that standard into effect--all ideas that are repulsive to this group of people.

Thats also why I never understood atheists fussing about prayer in schools, nativity scenes at Christmas, etc.
If its all a bunch of 'hokum' and meaningless why should they care? The claim that ' well if its state-sponsored then my tax dollars are supporting this nonsense!'. My reply is always 'Gee if thats the only nonsense {in their mind!} your tax dollars support then in comparison its tax dollars well spent!
