Frustration and Fear Boil Up in Pr. George's (SOARING CRIME RATE)
The Washington Post ^ | Sunday, January 22, 2006 | Allison Klein

Posted on 01/22/2006 1:17:05 PM PST by MinorityRepublican

Hundreds of Prince George's residents packed an Upper Marlboro church yesterday to warn county officials that they are fed up with increasing crime and want some relief.

"We are pushing not because we are antagonizing, but because we are terrified," said the Rev. C. Anthony Muse, one of the organizers of the meeting.

In 2005, Prince George's tallied 173 homicides, a record for the county. Additionally, sexual assaults increased by 3 percent, robberies by 24 percent and carjackings by 45 percent from the previous year.

Residents and a few county officials painted a grim picture of some streets and school halls, where criminals and unruly teens often have more control than law enforcement and principals.

"If you walk into almost any school, you will see things that shock you," said State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey, a panel member at the forum. "You've got kids cussing each other out, parents cussing out teachers, teachers are getting stay-away orders for parents."

The "War on Crime" countywide town hall meeting was held at the Riverdale Baptist Church. Many in the crowd, estimated at 1,000 by the organizers, had been touched personally by crime.

"an armed society is a polite society"

I really believe this quote to be a basic truth.

The east coast does have a lot of history. Daughter lived there for awhile and took in a lot of it. Was very interesting and we saw lots when we visited. The west is too young to have that kind of history but...it DOES have history and good history at that. Glad you were able to trace your ancestors. That's really nice.

I love Santa Fe because it is full of history as well. Taos is nice and QUIET which I like. Love Arizona but it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO busy and so much traffic anymore. Lived there for a few years too. Love going back east cause it is going home for us but...love the west.

I guess one has to be a local to even know where this city, town, state, or country is.

Prince George's County is located to the east of Washington D.C. in Maryland. The living conditions has deteriotrated quite rapidly in the past couple of years (decades?) due to the social ills associated with the minority population in P.G. County.

I hate to hear of the deterioration in PG County. Although I recall the PG Plaza Mall before they placed a Metro stop there, I used to eat lunch at the Mall's food court.

I once had a co-worker from Philadephia take a vacation through the western U.S. and come back and tell me the West had no culture. I replied that it did, but it was a western culture and not the eastern culture he was predisposed to try and find.

I too love the West but miss the late evenings when I could drive for hours in southeastern NM and never see another automobile. I used to tell my PG County co-workers I knew of places in NM that were virtually unknown to the public and whose beauty rivaled any of the National Parks in the East. Those beautiful places have now been discovered.

Those beautiful places have now been discovered.

I know what you mean. Growing up in Oregon in the '50's and '60's, my father would take me to all kinds of mountain lakes that we had to hike in to.

Now, most of them either have roads and RV campgrounds, or the Forest Service has closed the primitive campgrounds at the trailhead. Some of the best of them, though, are now in federal Wilderness Areas, and you still have to hike into them.

If anyone is interested, the best of the best of the central Oregon Cascade trails and lakes are Frog Camp and Scot Lake, and the trails in the area.

This area is just below the Three Sisters to the west, from the base of the peaks west to the edge of the Cascades plateau.

You'd best be quick, beacuse it may all be gone inside of a century. It appears that a new volcano began stirring about ten years ago.

I once saw a car spin out and bring all of northbound 295 to a halt. No one appeared to be hurt. Shortly afterwards, three kids scrambled out of the vehicle and scaled a fence, and hightailed it back to the hood. If there was a cop car in pursuit, it never showed up. All the other cars continued on their merry way.

these are the neighbors of the dips that elected the crack baby mayor. They deserve the crime because they want to play nice with criminals.

I may be repeatng myself cause something just happened to my computer but...I had posted that I too had to realize I was NOT in NJ and therefore could not find Bond Bread and Abbott, Suplee or Sealtest milk or tastykakes etc. However on the other hand I did learn to taste and like homemade tamales and tacos made fresh from scratch by some of the new found friends we had made. They on the other hand loved it when we would get salt water taffy from home and share it with them. :) Was nice learning new things but never after 46 years have we outgrown the sand in our shoes of the Jersey Shore. :) You are correct... the remote sites have all been discovered and populated. It'sad. I know it is all in the name of progress but sad nonetheless. The West indeed has its own rich culture and is filled with wonderful tales of "How the West was Won."

Everyone who can get out of PG is looking for houses in Rockville & Silver Spring.

The question begs, why Montgomery county isn't much better, and many of those who flee there will start the same things again there...

Actually, D.C. and PG County were not so bad until about then, too. I had a couple of elderly relatives decide Arizona looked better to them, "for their health" in '66 or so. They beat the rush to get out.

They already are. Our neighborhood [Montgomery Village] has already fled to Point of Rocks, at least all the families with kids have. Unsupervised pre-teens running amok, trash all over the parking lots, people fouling thier own nests. Its the "broken window" syndrome. Used to be a really nice place. We're looking to move to Virigina soon, just have to find something close to the metro-line for DC work.

Who is committing all the crime? Is this area being overrun with immigrants or has the existing citizenry just gone lawless?

My family history is the same as yours. I am not sure where they landed in America but they made the same pilgrimage across the country. Every other generation moved west until they arrived in Texas in the 1820's. We all have stayed here. How were you able to find out where your family landed?

Some is being committed by illegal immigrants, but it always has been a problem, largely in the African American community, which is actually the majority in PG county. This Rev. C. Anthony Muse, cited in the article isn't just an African American religious figure, but is also a major political figure in the county. Draw your own conclusions from that fact...
