SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Thousands of abortion opponents shouldering signs with slogans such as "Peace Begins in the Womb" marched in protest of the 33-year-old Roe v. Wade decision, while abortion rights supporters along the march route waved clothes hangers and shouted "Bigots go home."
The dueling protests - marking Sunday's anniversary of the Supreme Court decision - reflected the growing tension at a time the makeup of the high court is about to change with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement.
"It's a crucial time," said abortion rights supporter Carol Norris, 43, who joined the counter-protest in San Francisco Saturday. "We have (Judge Samuel) Alito poised to be on the Supreme Court, and he's clearly an anti-choice person."
On the other side, college student Laura Arnold, 20, of Pleasanton, Calif., marched with her mother opposing abortion, saying: "We're here to stand up for the babies that don't have a voice."
"I know so many girls who did it and they are hurting every day of their life," Arnold said.
The Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roe vs. Wade on Jan. 22, 1973, and abortion has been legal in the United States ever since. But efforts to restrict or outlaw the procedure have been just as enduring; 34 states have passed laws requiring parents either to be notified or to give consent when their underage daughters seek abortions.
"Abortion rights have been slowly whittled away while we haven't even been looking," said Kitty Striker, 22, who decorated her hair with small coat hanger replicas for the counter-protest. "That's what's so shocking and so scary to me."
Many abortion opponents said they were heartened by President Bush's choice of Alito to replace O'Connor, a moderate who was often the court's swing vote.
Alito's refusal during his confirmation hearings to agree with assertions by Democrats that Roe v. Wade was "settled law" upset abortion rights activists.
The largest abortion demonstration was expected Monday in Washington, D.C., where anti-abortion activists planned to converge on the mall to hear speakers supporting their cause and march on the Congress and Supreme Court.
In Michigan, a group pastors and ministry leaders used the anniversary Sunday to launch a new anti-abortion organization, Michigan Chooses Life. One goal is to support efforts to get a measure on the 2006 ballot that would change the state constitution to legally define a person as existing at the moment of conception. The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan has said that even if the measure did succeed, it would be challenged in court.
At the San Francisco protest, Archpriest Michael Regan of St. Michael's Orthodox Church in Concord, Calif., said it was important to show how mixed public opinion is on abortion, even in liberal cities like San Francisco.
"You do get the impression that there isn't anyone here for the right to life, but look around," he said.
So trying to stop murder is "bigotry"?
"We have (Judge Samuel) Alito poised to be on the Supreme Court, and he's clearly an anti-choice person."
No, he's anti-murder.
Pro-Life ping.
"Abortion rights have been slowly whittled away while we haven't even been looking"
GIVE ME ONE EXAMPLE, ONE ABORTION "RIGHT" THAT HAS BEEN "WHITTLED AWAY".
Ultra liberal media bias alert.
Dear wagglebee,
"No, he's anti-murder."
Or so we hope. And so we hope he will stay. Unlike the once pro-life, now Satan-worshipping Anthony Kennedy.

This is just my opinion, but I don't think we should give up on Anthony Kennedy. I truly believe that if there is the right case and there are four other justices who have a legitimate opinion that will overturn Roe v. Wade and send abortion back to the states that Kennedy will vote with them.
Peace!!!! Peace!!!!
What is peaceful about a tiny human, being torn apart!
Sick
Dear wagglebee,
I don't "give up" on anyone. All can be converted, brought to repentance, and saved from damnation, even the Satan-worshipping "justice" Anthony Kennedy, pseudo-Catholic.
However, it is clear that the formerly Catholic Anthony Kennedy has embraced Satan and all his dark works, and now works overtime to give legitimacy to the sacrifice of unborn children at the altar of Moloch.
It is likely that "justice" Kennedy will burn in the deepest, rankest, hottest pit of Hell, but while he yet lives, there is still hope.
We should pray that Mr. Alito not succumb to the glamor of evil as did "justice" Kennedy.

IIRC, Kennedy was prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade during the Casey decision along with Blackmun, Rehnquist, Scalia and Thomas, but they couldn't agree on the opinion.
All I see is 40 million dead innocent children ... and the MSM complains that 1,000 murderers have been executed ... somewhere I'm missing something????
It takes one to know one.
Some of the biggest bigots i've observed are pro-abort Catholics. They complain about latinos and blacks moving into their neighborhoods and applying for welfare. They wish minorities would just go away. They have been taught the ideas of Margaret Sanger well.
Dear wagglebee,
"IIRC, Kennedy was prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade during the Casey decision along with Blackmun, Rehnquist, Scalia and Thomas, but they couldn't agree on the opinion."
Actually, Chief Justice Rehnquist, and Justices White, Scalia, and Thomas all signed a common dissent agreeing that Roe should go. "justice" Blackmun was the actual author of Roe, and thus, would have been uninterested in avoiding damnation by overturning his preciousss.
"justice" Kennedy would have provided the fifth vote.
However, should the Satan-worshipping "justice" Kennedy repent of his abominable crimes against God, then he may avoid eternal damnation, though it would be unsurprising to find him in Purgatory until the end of time.

Dear wagglebee,
Here is a quote from the opinion:
JUSTICE SCALIA, joined by THE CHIEF JUSTICE, JUSTICE WHITE, and JUSTICE THOMAS, concluded that a woman's decision to abort her unborn child is not a constitutionally protected "liberty," because (1) the Constitution says absolutely nothing about it, and (2) the longstanding traditions of American society have permitted it to be legally proscribed. See, e.g., Ohio v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health, 497 U.S. 502, 520 (SCALIA, J., concurring). The Pennsylvania statute should be upheld in its entirety under the rational basis test. Pp. 979-981.
"justice" Kennedy could have provided the fifth vote for this, and Roe would have been no more.
Instead, "justice" Kennedy must bear the weight on his shoulders, his soul, of every abortion committed since Casey was decided. For these millions of murdered innocents, he must pay his debt to God and man.

SF Chronicle's caption:
A demonstrator called Sister Mary Timothy of San Francisco prepares for the pro-choice march.
I was mistaken, I believe it was Byron White who was willing to overturn.
This appeared in our Church Bulletin today:
This week we received a powerful letter from our Archbishop
asking us to pray together for a greater respect for all
human life:
"As you know, this Jan. 22 is the 33rd anniversary of Roe v Wade and Doe v. Bolton, the US Supreme Court decisions that opened the door to abortion on demand throughout all nine months of pregnancy and even during birth. Since 1973
more than 46 million children hve been aborted in our nation. This national tragedy has a tremendous local impact within the Archdiocese of Chicago. According to the Illinois Dept of Public Health, more than 22,900 abortions took place in Cook and Lake Counties in 2004 alone. Thousands of women and men suffer in silence in the pews of our parishes, while many more have left the Church entirely because of their abortion experience. As the Body of Christ, we are left with the signifiant task of reaching out with Christ's hope and healing to those suffering from post-abortion aftermath, while peacefully working to prevent the additional killings of thousands of innocents right in our own communities. The prayers and penance of the faithful, as well as your ministry and that of others dedicated to the cause of life, will ultimately transform our culture into one that cherishes and protects every human life, no matter how unformed, broken, guilty or vulnerable that life might be.
Because of this urgent need, my brother Bishops and I agreed in 2001 to make important adaptations to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal regarding the anniversary of Roe v. Wade:
In all the dioceses of the USA, Jan. 22 (this year, Monday, Jan 23rd, as the 22nd falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. ThHe Mass "For Peace and Justice" is celebrated with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance for this day...
****
In my Church, the Mass for Monday will be set aside for prayer for healing and a change of heart. The intentions throughout the day will focus on INTERCESSIONS FOR LIFE:
1. For Children who are unwanted by their parents, that God's grace might send others to love and care for them,we
pray to the Lord...
2. For a growing love of each human person from conception to the natural death, we pray to the Lord...
3. For medical researchers, that inspired by the beauty of human life they might seek to be co-workers with God in fulfillment of his divine plan, we pray to the Lord...
4. For all who are lonely, or afraid, for teenagers on the street, old people in nursing homes, prisoners with no one to visit them, and all who the world has forgotten, that Christ might lead us to them, we pray to the Lord...
from CARDINAL GEORGE's Pastoral Letter.
If that's a nun then I'll eat my rosary beads.
I shudder to think how many "little people" there were waiting to wave Harry A. Blackmun into hell.
It's San Francisco. Looks more like a brother than sister to me.
