A choice, not an echo

By Colin McNickle TRIBUNE-REVIEW Sunday, January 22, 2006

John Shadegg has written his Republican Party leadership obituary. At least in this Republican Party. The Arizona congressman, a dark-horse candidate to become House majority leader, has invoked the "G"-word in a GOP that, for the most part, treats the principles of Barry Goldwater like a teenage girl treats a fresh pimple on prom night. That would be with disdain and derision.

What a shame. Not for Rep. Shadegg, mind you; but for real Republicans, true conservatives and a badly wanting country.

It is not terribly surprising that Republican Congress-critters have become that which thy have claimed to disdain. It is, however, amazing to see the number of people who feel that the GOP is going to stem the tide that is burying this country in sh--.

The lesser of two evils is still... (Lesser is becoming, more and more, a distinction without a difference.)

Barry Goldwater said (not a quote, but from old brain cells): Bomb Hanoi and blockade Haiphong Harbor and we will bring the enemy to its knees. He was branded a "Hawk". If I had been old enough to vote for him, I would have.

When President Nixon was elected, he carried on with Goldwater's suggestions....until we got the North Vietnamese to the bargaining table. Then the Democrats took over and lost the war for us.

That's what happens when politicians lead soldiers by the nose.

Methinks we need to raise the volume like we did for the last SCOTUS nomination, and let the House leadership know that we are not amused with business as usual.
Real reform and someone with the cajones to make it happen are what the GOP need to avoid being swept away in November.

Shadegg may not have written an obituary if we let Hastert know that his continued perquisites require his Party to remain in power, and that remaining in power not only requires him to "talk the talk but walk the walk" as well.

As Mel Brooks in his role of the Governor in Blazing Saddles said, " Gentlemen, we have to do something to protect our phony baloney jobs! Harrumph!!!".

I understand that it is difficult to be the party of small government when you are the government, but the GOP has made an art form of enlarging the size, scope, and cost of government.

Even the so called conservatives of reknown work to expand government to implement the pet projects.

NO is one of the most powerful words in our language. It's seems to have been lost in DC. I'm still waiting for Bush to say NO! to anything that comes out of Congress.

Now I need to call Melissa's office to tell her to vote for Shadegg.
