VIENNA (AFP) - UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei wants to give Iran until March to comply with international inspections, despite an emergency meeting set for February that could bring Tehran before the UN Security Council for possible sanctions, diplomats told AFP.
"He doesn't want to move the date up all of a sudden. He wouldn't have the information he needs sooner and also he wants to give the Iranians due process," as he had told the Iranians they would have until March to comply, a Western diplomat said.

He doesn't want to disturb Iran in their progress to get nukes:
Tehran plans nuclear weapon test by March

Yeah, you know, all around, March seems likes it's going to be an "interesting" time to be alive. Let's see... where's my #4000 sunblock?
Should read: UN nuclear lapdog...
He's effectively ensured that this won't reach the Security Council before Iran gets it's nuke. Any action taken before then to deny the Iranians their bomb will be taken unilaterally by Israel or the US and will be thoroughly condemned by the international community. One more example of the worthlessness of the UN.
Sure, the guy is worthless, but what does it matter? When it gets referred to the UN Security Council, what is it going to do?
NOTHING.
Mohamed ElBaradei has been around for some time, and is obviously a favorite of Kofi Annans and the powers that control the UN bureaucracy--France, China, Russia, and the countries that have a real stake in the UN as a way of increasing their power and influence.
ElBaradei openly intervened in our last election, accusing Bush of being a liar, and he wasn't disciplined then. Naturally not, because Jean Kerry was their preferred candidate.
As long as the United States acts as if it didn't care what the UN bureaucracy does, it will continue to act up like this.
"also he wants to give the Iranians due process"
Is this a traffic case? We're talking about nuts getting nuclear arms.
March, huh? Maybe he's waiting to see if the Iranians really do test a nuke.
Hey Cicero, I got a president and an ambasador to the U.N. that neither give a damn what the buggers at the U.N. think.
Mr. Bush is going to do what he thinks is best.
Let's get some hot dogs to cook at the bar-b.
do I really have to say it???
Yes, they are moving in the right direction, and Bush has done better turning around the team at the UN than almost anywhere else in his administration.
But we are still paying most of the bills to support the UN bureaucrats, yet have very little influence in selecting them or firing them. Most of the top level bureaucrats are a disgrace.
And the U.N. and its top echelon is different from our gubmnts just how? I mean local, state, and federal? None of them listen to their constituants, just do what is best for their own walletts.
Bush is wasting time.
It's not amusing.
I've never understood why any Muslim was entrusted with this job. He has been consistently "wrong" - that is, the Muslim "ooops" factor in deceiving the infidel.
You are right there.
It whould have happened a long time ago. When Iran started sending insurgents into Iraq to kill our kids.
Mr. Reagan would have and damn the consequnces.
I can't believe anyone takes a process headed by a guy named Mohammad designed to keep an Islamic country from getting nukes seriously.
Yeah- is somebody pouring whacky juice into the water supply? David Duke can run the Negro College fund.
It's like putting Cheech and Chong in charge of a DEA evidence room.
He's not to be trusted.
