Mainstream conservative wins. Flakey-fringy-fruity conservative doesn't. Just the truth.

I'm beginning to think that John McCain, no favorite of most of us here, will coast to the 2008 GOP nomination, much as Reagan did 28 years earlier. I predict that too, but with George Allen as VP. Better the two of them than Hillary.
To: Theodore R.
You're smokin rope. No way will conservatives rally behind the McCainiac.
Someone will step out, it's still very early. Think Karl Rove would allow McCainiac to follow GWB? ;)
To: HitmanNY
I remember reading that the entertainer Connie Stevens, a close friend of McCain's, once said that she was pro-McCain because he made her "feel safe." Even if McCain seems rather nutty to us, he does make many Republicans and even independents "feel safe."

Maybe you are right, and maybe McCain will cement an early lead and never look back. At this point, who can stop him? The fact that polls say he is the only electable Republican could play in his favor.

I have thought of this scenario as well. It seems like a win-win to me. Get Rice in there to gain the public acceptance of her as VP plus she gets invaluable on the job training.
I always thought that if Clinton would have stepped down as President during the impeachment trial Gore would have won in 2000.

Yes, conservatives won't rally behind McCain, but he can win without conservative support in the early stages. Only later would he need conservatives, who will of course soundly oppose his potential opponent, the popular HRC.

I know what you mean; when I first heard him speak on the floor of the Senate, I cringed.
Then I saw him work over the Dems on the Senate Foreign Relations committee during the Bolton nomination.
I'd vote for him.

We should not reward illegal behavior through amnesty. This will only beget more criminal behavior. Yup...he's running in 2008...

There's a deal breaker, I don't support school vouchers. Why on earth is it a deal breaker if he states the money should go with the child, so if the local district wants to try vouchers, it is free to do so? Do you support the Federal taking away money if the district doesn't spend it on public schools?
To: Howlin
He's got my vote, too. But as you said, he has some deficiencies. They need not be fatal, though. Wait and see.

I've never met the man but he strikes me as roughly our side's equivalent of Kerry.I'll bet he catches a football better than Kerry does.
