Yes, conservatives won't rally behind McCain, but he can win without conservative support in the early stages. Only later would he need conservatives, who will of course soundly oppose his potential opponent, the popular HRC.

Right, conservatives will not let Hillary win, even if it means voting for McCain. If Hillary doesn't run(is that possible?), I don't think we need McCain. Otherwise, I fear that we do (in order to win).
