I know this is a bit old by FR standards, but thought it was worth a look (especially for those not familiar with Allen) as we get ready for 2008. The more we know about those running - the better. I am fairly new at this posting stuff, and am wondering is this considered a "vanity" since it is not really "news"? I tried to post it over at general chat not to upset anyone's sensibilities, but there was no topic for it there(and BTW I would NOT spell chronicles that way).

For those who haven't heard me...

Shortly after the 2006 Mid term elections, Cheney makes a decision to step down due to his health, Bush names Rice to fulfill the balance of the term, and it becomes a Rice/Allen2008 winning ticket in 2008.

Resulting in; 8 yrs of W, 8 yrs of Rice/Allen, and then 8 yrs of Allen/????.

We all better chip in and get Allen a personality before the primaries.

"We all better chip in and get Allen a personality before the primaries."

He comes across as quite personable in the interviews that I've seen.

Oh no, is he that BORING in person? I haven't seen too much of him actually. He sounds good in print. Well, they like him in Virginia. The new Rasmussen poll has him with a big lead:

January 18, 2006--Virginia Senator George Allen (R) leads Northern Virginia businessman Harris Miller (D) by 30 percentage points in his bid for re-election. Miller just recently filed to enter the race and has not had the opportunity for much campaigning at this point. He is the only Democrat so far to step forward and challenge Allen. While November is a long way away, this data suggests that Miller has a very steep hill to climb. Allen is viewed favorably by 70% of Virginia voters and unfavorably by 25%. For Miller, those numbers are 38% favorable, 31% unfavorable, and 31% not sure.

Condi Rice has never run for anything. I just don't see us nominating her with no personal campaign experience.

Just a little good natured teasing from our side, that's all. Like when I make fun of Dubya being stuck on the 2003 script - "Freedom...." (squint) "It's on the march...." (incongruent smile) "We're winning!!" :-)

I've never met the man but he strikes me as roughly our side's equivalent of Kerry. He isn't nearly as pretentious as Kerry, but sort of a dull type. He does have a folksy appeal, which Kerry never had, but on the personality meter he rates pretty low.

Good fella, from all I can tell.

"Do you support private school vouchers?

"Yes, I support vouchers as a state and local option. Washington, DC is under federal jurisdiction, and I supported it for DC. Now, about 1,700 students have vouchers under the DC Choice program, which they can carry to private schools. I don't think the Federal Government should mandate it, but it also shouldn't prevent it. The money should go with the student, if the state and localities wish.

There's a deal breaker, I don't support school vouchers. He says he believes in stopping illegals, but supports "guest worker program".I DON'T.

He is a mainstream-conservative type. Don't expect anything earthshaking from him.

Freepers tend to forget that the electorate on balance is nowhere near as conservative as FR. He is a good fit for most conservatives and Republicans.

He seems fine to me - I like school vouchers, personally. And the it will take a severe terror attack to shore the border, since neither party leadership seems that interested. The guest worker program is the best we can do - it's practical, though not notably conservative. I take practical and mildly principled over impractical and too rigidly principled any day of the week (I know, a minority position on FR but we don't live on 'Fantasy Island').

Well, it sounds like he's no Bill Clinton, but that's not bad. I like "folksy."

I'm with you, but we have to have clarity. He is a dull sort of fella, can't be denied. That's a minus in national politics.

I think an Allen/Rice(vp) ticket is the better bet, though Senators are a long shot to win POTUS.

I'm beginning to think that John McCain, no favorite of most of us here, will coast to the 2008 GOP nomination, much as Reagan did 28 years earlier.

Well, we nominated Wendell Willkie 66 years ago, and he had no personal hands-on experience either. Of course, no one could beat FDR, who had his own pipeline to the public.

"Mainstream-conservative" types are often infected with the Rodney King Syndrome.

Well, name ID means 90 percent to most, and McCain has the name ID over all the others.

Jud,

I'm sure you have your ears on for this thread. Congratulations for scoring this interview. George Allen is my man for 2008, and this helps confirm my opinion of him.
