Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in an appearance Friday flanked by Democratic and Republican legislators, used the signing ceremony for a prescription drug bill to push his newest campaign -- the joys of bipartisanship in Sacramento.
"I'm the people's governor. I'm the governor of the Democrats and the Republicans. So I cannot just cater to one party,'' said Schwarzenegger, during a stop at an Alameda Safeway.
The governor, criticized throughout the past year for blasting Democrats and trying to play to a conservative audience, has changed his talk in light of his devastating defeat in last November's special election.
On Friday, he publicly rejected criticism from those former GOP allies about his efforts to move to the center and brushed aside their demands that he fire his new chief of staff, Democrat Susan Kennedy.
"I have always said we have to take the politics out of this, and cater to our people,'' Schwarzenegger said.
And noting he is officially running for re-election, Schwarzenegger added, "I will go out and campaign this year ... I've got to be in the center, and I've got to govern.''
The bipartisan talk came as part of an unusually upbeat appearance Friday in the Democratic East Bay stronghold.

"All of us working together, Democrats and Republicans, we got this legislation done,'' Schwarzenegger told the crowd as he stood at the podium at grocery store's pharmacy, which was next to the frozen meat section and across from the potato chip aisle. "I want to thank ... the Democrats and the Republican leaders who came together here.''
Indeed, to underscore the show of unity, the two legislators hugged for the bank of TV cameras.

The sweet ring of success in the CAGOP's ear.
Yes Arnold, all of use working together can get the Democrats wildest pipe-dreams implemented if we try. Good one...
Now, which party are you a member of? And what of it's core pipe-dreams?
Insert " " here...
I still have no regrets about not voting for him in the primary.
DD, do you hear any uproar at all from the Republican members of the Legislature? With only a couple of exceptions, they are quiet as can be. This isn't solely a problem of what we have for a governor. The state is enmeshed in the death throws of liberalism. Schwarzenegger is simply the latest entrant, into this calamity.
Even the head of the RP in California, is mute as a man with his mouth sewn shut. This is an election year, and even with all the evidence shown to them, the top Republicans in the state are please as punch that no challenge will be launched.
We've been sold out as completely as is possible.
Dead on target IMO...
Actually, he's got his head in the sand:
Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim said that if Republicans remain unhappy with the governor, it could hurt the party's chances of collecting enough campaign money to help elect other Republicans to office."You're going to have these disagreements in the family as we grow," he said. "It's just part of the fact that we're getting bigger."
Sundheim believes that by the time the election rolls around, Republicans will be back in the governor's camp. [Source: OC Register]
We shall see won't we Sundheim.
You watch, this could be California's lowest voter turnout in decades. What may suffer a fatal blow, will be real conservative issues in the initiatives. Let's hope not.
