Students fill Burns Back Court for Carville and Coulter

Political strategist James Carville sported Mardi Gras colors as he spoke to a packed Burns Back Court on Thursday.

Ann Coulter, who spoke after Carville, is a conservative author, columnist and commentator.

Burns Back Court was packed to capacity last night as members of the LMU community piled in to see back-to-back speeches from political strategist James Carville and political commentator Ann Coulter as a part of the Loyolan's fourth annual First Amendment Week.

A line for the event began forming at 4:30 p.m., 90 minutes before the doors opened. There were 750 chairs set up in Burns Back Court, and many students stood in the back of the room once the chairs were all filled. When Carville's speech began, there were still hundreds of people waiting outside the Back Court, although when others left, those still waiting in line were allowed to enter.

"We were so happy that so many students came out to support the event, and it was unfortunate we could not accommodate everyone," said Loyolan interim Editor in Chief Natalie Nordseth. "It reflects so well on this university that there was such a positive response and we will definitely take that into consideration when planning next year's program."

Nordseth said that the Loyolan is already looking into speakers for next year's First Amendment Week, and encouraged the LMU community to submit suggestions. She can be contacted at nnordseth@theloyolan.com

The ROAR Network and LMUTV will replay Carville's speech and question and answer session as well Coulter's question and answer session from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. beginning today on channel six.

If last night's event was a test, LMU passed with flying colors!

Not only did they prove that they had good manners, they turned out in MUCH LARGER numbers than the nay-sayers had predicted, completely overwhelming the tiny venue chosen this FIRST of what now may be MANY similar events.
