Molly Ivins: I Won't Back Hillary

"I'd like to make it clear to the people who run the Democratic Party that I will not support Hillary Clinton for president.”

With that pronouncement, liberal syndicated columnist Molly Ivins begins a blistering column that castigates Hillary and the Democratic Party for failing to take a strong stand on a variety of issues important to liberals like her.

Et tu, Brute?

"Enough triangulation, calculation and equivocation. Enough clever straddling, enough not offending anyone,” Ivins writes in her column on CNN.com.

"Sen. Clinton is apparently incapable of taking a clear stand on the war in Iraq, and that alone is enough to disqualify her. Her failure to speak out on Terri Schiavo, not to mention that gross pandering on flag-burning, are just contemptible little dodges ...

"There are times when regular politics will not do, and this is one of those times. There are times a country is so tired of bull that only the truth can provide relief.

"If no one in conventional-wisdom politics has the courage to speak up and say what needs to be said, then you go out and find some obscure junior senator from Minnesota with the guts to do it. In 1968, Gene McCarthy was the little boy who said out loud, ‘Look, the emperor isn't wearing any clothes.’”

Ivins says the majority of Americans believe the war in Iraq is a mistake and the U.S. should get out, and a majority are also in favor of raising the minimum wage, repealing President Bush’s tax cuts, imposing a windfall profits tax on big oil companies and reducing the deficit not by cutting domestic spending, but by reducing Pentagon spending or raising taxes.

"That is the center, you fools,” Ivins tells Hillary and the Democrats. "WHO ARE YOU AFRAID OF?”

For "pragmatic folk” like Hillary, Joe Biden and Joe Lieberman, Ivins urges: "Oh come on, people - get a grip on the concept of leadership ...

"Do not sit there cowering and pretending the only way to win is as Republican-lite. If the Washington-based party can't get up and fight, we'll find someone who can.”

So why does anyone still bother to seek Molly Ivan's opinion on anything?

"If Hillary wins the nomination, Muley will immediately, completely and permanently forget she wrote that column and will promote Hillary as the Best. Nominee. Ever."

At which point the MSM will never mention this column, ever!

Hillery just does not have Bill's touch of telling every audience exactly what they want the hear without pissing the last or the next audience off.

Say whatever you like about Slick Willie, but no politician was ever so convincingly sincere while lying through his teeth. I'll bet you that crazy Molly still really thinks that Bill believes exactly what she believes.

Yeah, now all you need to do is find a handful of millionaires to fund this new McCarthy the way they funded the old one. Oh, right, that's "buying" a candidate, eh, Mol? She hits the target, though, in the most important way--if the dems truly believed their crap, they would fearlessly say what they REALLY believe...and accept the consequences. Same for Conservatives.

Yep, here's a winning platform: Dems stand for cutting and running, raising minimum wage (and your food bill, restaurant tabs, lawn service, dry cleaning etc.), and raising your taxes. If that's not enough, they'll reduce Pentagon spending and embolden the Osama's of the world.

I gotta give it to you Molly, you're on the money - now go out there and talk dems into running on your platform -- and do it now -- before the midterm elections... </sarcasm>

I think Molly is just afraid of strong women in positions of power.

Isn't that what feminists always say when men oppose Hillary?

Correct!

I see a last-minute change of heart on Mol's part. "Well, she's better than eight more years of blah blah blah..."

Hillary vs. Molly Like two scorpions in a bottle, or snakes in a sack.

Them's two fat scorpions, and those snakes are fighting over a sack of potato chips.

The Dimocrats are starting to understand that HELLary cannot give them the win they deperately want in 2008.

As soon as the DIMocrats realize that HELLARY can't win , they will drop her like a hot potato. This will be an election, not a coronation.

O Victory!

It is so sweet! Dims disunified and in disarray!

Not to mention completely disconnected with Americans!

I think this is one of those stopped clock being right twice per day moments.

Of course, I'm being downright generous there.

Hillary may run, but she won't win. She is too old (and looks it), her politics are from the 60's and her voice will continue to become thinner and more screechy over the next three years.

And as for race, there really is nothing to be said as this administration has many more blacks and Hispanics than did the Clinton administration.
