Former professor may be doomed to repeat history

In the late 1980s, a history professor from Marquette University named John William Rooney walked into the French National Archives in Paris and walked out with a copy of the 1814 Treaty of Fontainebleau, a woven paper with red wax seals and a green silk cord through which Napoleon Bonaparte agreed to give up the French empire and accept exile.

The opportunity to steal a major piece of history, Rooney said, was too tempting to pass up. "If you were to stand in front of the pyramids of Egypt, you might pick up a chip, too," he said last week during an interview in which he admitted stealing the document.

Okay, not only is this guy a history professor, but on top of that, Marquette is a Catholic institution, is it not?

Wonder what they think about theft? I mean, this guy is defiling academic, religious, and just plain moral standards in every way imaginable.

And then the fact that he would be "greatly distressed" if this were re-opened. I mean, I'm glad he thinks he's closed the doors on this and all. Yep, that's all that's involved in closing the doors, right? Ha!

Put this man on trial. Period.

Exile to St. Helena would be an appropriate punishment.

Marquette, like most of the other Universities run by the Jesuit order in the US can be considered only nominally Catholic.

I graduated from Marquette a couple of times in the '80's, you could find the Catholic character there, but you had to look for it yourself. Now it just seems to have been lost altogether.

Flamboyant is pretty much the French word for "flamer."

I'm just saying...

I agree. Every time I turn around it seems like my alma mater does something else stupid, inane or politically correct. It sure makes it wasy to throw away the alumni donation appeals...
