More likely - IF he was an aristocrat he was "sacrificed" to ensure leadership went to the one deemed "more worthy to rule" (in other words, his killer or the guy who hired it done)
Saying a man was ritually sacrificed by being bludgeoned from behind is strikingly similar to "he committed suicide by firing five shots into the back of his head"
It's anthropology, if you don't understand why something was done it was for religion.
