Saying a man was ritually sacrificed by being bludgeoned from behind is strikingly similar to "he committed suicide by firing five shots into the back of his head"It's anthropology, if you don't understand why something was done it was for religion.

When jimmy came back home he was surprised that they were gone
He asked me all the details of the train that they went on
Some people they are scared to croak but jimmy drank until he choked
And he took the road for heaven in the morning
We walked him to the station in the rain
We kissed him as we put him on the train
And we sang him a song of times long gone
Though we knew that wed be seeing him again

Nothing too unusual about this. Eastern Woodland Native American tribes used to use all kinds of animal fat in their hair--especially bear-fat. It was used to keep the insect infestation down. Better bear fat than bugs.
Apparently, it didn't do much for one's smell, though.

Exactly. One wonders what people 2,000 years from now will make of our landfills--particularly the ones that contain aborted fetuses.
They will correctly deduce that we were a sick, depraved culture that practiced baby sacrifice.

I've never heard of aristocrat sacrifice before. Murder, yes, sacrifice no.God of the Witches, by Margaret Murray, outlines a European fertility religion based on King sacrifice which she claims persisted from at least eight thousand years ago into historical times.

Archaeologists believe that Clonycavan man was an aristocrat who may have been part of a ritualistic sacrifice. The Holy Mugging with the Sacred Cudgel, to mystically enrich the Pius Hermit, who saw him as the gods' Gift to the Deflated Purse Ritual?

It's NOT good to be the King? IIRC, the King was sacrificed every seven years. Timing is everything.

"I've never heard of aristocrat sacrifice before. Murder, yes, sacrifice no"Joseph Campbell on mythology, writes that Kingship first arose as a form of sacrifice whereby a person was elevated to the kingship position for 7 years or so and then sacrificed. The pool of candidates for kingship was limited to the societal elites.

You'd think the first thing a new King would do is abolish this rule....

"You'd think the first thing a new King would do is abolish this rule...."Excellent point but they were true believers. One of the reasons for using the elites was that they felt the societal pressure of clan and family more than the common folk did and could be relied upon to play the game. The reward was "It is good to be the king" even if for only 7 years. Lots of wives, concubines and children and a life of comfort.

Ned Kelly, the head of antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland, said: "My belief is that these burials are offerings to the gods of fertility by kings to ensure a successful reign." Interesting theory.
