STERLING, Va. - The Senate may be the place for some former first ladies, but President Bush on Thursday categorically ruled out a run for office by his wife, Laura Bush.
"She's not interested in running for office. She's interested in literacy," Bush said during an appearance at JK Moving & Storage here.
The topic came up as the president took questions from his audience after a speech on the economy. A woman asked if Mrs. Bush would ever run for Senate from the first couple's home state of Texas, and Bush responded "never" twice.
He also declined the woman's plea that she at least ask Mrs. Bush if she might be willing.
"She's a great lady," the president said. "She's not interested in running for office."
Mrs. Bush's popularity well exceeds her husband's, leading some to speculate that she might follow in the footsteps of her predecessor as first lady, now-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., and seek elected office. But, as the president dryly pointed out, his intensely private wife has never shown any interest in running for office.
"I'm pretty certain, when I married her she didn't like politics or politicians," Bush said.
With an influence-peddling scandal swirling around Washington, Bush also said he expects elected officials to comply with the law and be open to scrutiny.
"In Washington, D.C., there needs to be high standards for the conduct of public officials," he said after a man asked him about tax fraud.
Several lawmakers are being investigated for their ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who has admitted to conspiring to defraud his Indian tribe clients, which he sometimes directed to contribute to elected officials.
Bush's re-election campaign has given to charity $6,000 donated by Abramoff, his wife and a tribe he represented. The well-connected lobbyist raised more than $100,000 for the Bush-Cheney campaign, earning him the honorary title of "pioneer," but the campaign is keeping the rest of the money.
Thank God Laura Bush isn't interested in turning into a cackling old prune face hen, like the Jr. Senator from the state of New York.
I love it! LOL!

"She's not interested in running for office. She's interested in literacy"
Ouch.
The president recognizing the two are mutually exclusive goals.
The Freudian verbal efficiency of Bush.
By Jennifer Loven yet! The money quote, no doubt, went right over her head.
LOL. He truly is brilliant in his simplicity.
OH DAILY DOSERS ping listttt
Besides, she'll be having too much fun being the wife of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball (we can hope, can't we?)
I'd like to see her in Condi's administration - say Sec of ED.
I imagine that both of the Bushes' are looking ahead to a more quiet, tranquil time on their ranch in Crawford, TX starting in 2009. They'll come out for conventions, etc, but by then they may be into say grandchildren and their families. Not ALL politicians are lifers...our first presidents and cabinet people held regular jobs and took their responsibilities in leading the nation as their duty to country, but most all rather preferred being back on their plantations, farms, homes, etc. It's only this last century where politics has become the ends to the means and people like the Clintons didn't even have a home before they got into politics!
"She's a great lady," the president said. "She's not interested in running for office."
I liked this one too.
But, as the president dryly pointed out, his intensely private wife has never shown any interest in running for office.

My business partner attended today's speech and appearance by President Bush....and got to shake his hand.
I asked him if he washed it yet as I grabbed his hand to shake it.
He assured me that he hadn't visited the men's room since he returned to the office. ;^)
I am sitting here half sick with stomach flu, been puking for 2 days and diarhea. Take my advice Wash your hands. I hope the President is careful to wash his.
Understand you can catch that virus on doorknobs, etc....so I'd be washing my paws every hour.
I'm afraid its too late for me, but I advise it of anyone who hasnt got it yet.
