'Plantation' remarks still echoing on Hill
The Washington Times ^ | January 19, 2006 | Donald Lambro

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's fiery political remark Monday that the Republican House is like a "plantation" has triggered charges of playing the race card and a sharp rebuke from first lady Laura Bush, who called her comment ridiculous.

The New York Democrat's racial broadside during a Martin Luther King Day appearance at a Baptist church in Harlem continued to spark debate yesterday on both sides of the political aisle.

Black Democratic leaders such as Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois defended and attempted to explain Mrs. Clinton's remarks, saying she was referring to a "further consolidation of power" by Republicans in Washington. But Mrs. Bush, en route home from a trip to West Africa, said, "I think it's ridiculous -- it's a ridiculous comment."

Speaking at a civil rights forum celebrating King's legacy, Mrs. Clinton attempted to score some political points with the party's loyal black constituency, charging that the Republican-controlled House was "run like a plantation."

"And you know what I am talking about," she said.

Until now, Mrs. Clinton has largely avoided political controversy, trying to position herself as a centrist Democrat in anticipation of a potential run for president in 2008. But her sharply worded attack on Republicans and the White House before a predominantly black audience has made her the target of a political firestorm.

Earlier this week, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said her attack was "out of bounds" and "way out of line," adding that "the political season may be starting early."

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert's response was even sharper.

"If she's trying to be racist, I think that's unfortunate," the Illinois Republican said.

"If she's trying to be racist, I think that's unfortunate," the Illinois Republican said.

IMHO, that's the best comment that I've ever heard from the Speaker.

Sean Hannity was desperately trying to get Hastert to really SLAM Clinton over this...but, that quote was about as "harsh" as Denny would get...

But I do have a soft spot for the guy who said that unlike Congresscritters, slaves on plantations at least did useful work.

The fact that the Demon-Rats have to pander so much to the 13% black and 2-3% gay groups show how much trouble they are in. Most of the swing to Republicans (the right) has actually been just plain people finding their place that had moved left into the fringes of the radical, racist, sexist, Demon-Ratic Party. It just take some longer than others. Watching Killer Ted, credit checker Chuckie, and I've heard that before Biden only speeds the process. Only the elitist seeking power, and the uninformed stupid remain.

"And you know what I am talking about," she said.

Oh yeah, Shrillary, Harlem blacks all came from southern plantations, they know all about it.

Dims are so desparate for power. Their hype and nonsense gets worse by the day, but I guess that is good for us.

Hillary will get away with this because most of the public is too uninformed and won't even understand the implication of the word 'plantation.' Plus, she won't allow herself to be grilled by a reporter. The liberals love her, no matter what she says. I, on the other hand, despise everything she stands for, and that includes her husband.

I'm trying to think of another instance when one First Lady dissed another publicly. Bush calling Clinton's remarks "ridiculous" seems unique.

Are these rebukes from a House "leader" and WH "Spokesman" all the outrage they could muster??

Lame-O. Especially Hastert.

Have we a quote from that conservative warrior Frist?

This is today's Hillary Al! Tomorrow's Hillary will be different. Maybe the day after tomorrow she'll be like she was yesterday! Sucker!

Hillary has succeeded in her effort. Y'all are missing the point:

Who is Hillary most afraid of in 2008? Rice.

And what one word accurately will be employed by commentators to encapsulate the essence of why she will draw formerly Dem voters? Plantation. Hillary has succeeded in poisoning that well.

You can just hear "oh, we've heard all this before, I think that we need to get beyond this."

"And you know what I am talking about,"

New catch phrase for Hillary!

Hillary's a shrill shrew. And you know what I am talking about.

Hillary's a racebaiter. And you know what I am talking about.

Hillary's a _____________. And you know what I am talking about.

Oh what fun!

Are you trying to say Dr. Rice is on the pubbie plantation? Besides the obvious sex difference, what's the difference in calling conservative blacks, "Uncle Toms"?

Barack Obama another of Hillary's House Negroes. Of course he defends her, just like he is trained to do. There is a Plantation and the Democrats are running it. When the Dems say Crap the blacks in the CBC say Yassuh what color does you want and where does you want it.
