Crimean Tatars Call On Kyiv To Restore Their Rights

Crimean Tatars Call On Kyiv To Restore Their Rights 12 December 2005 -- Members of the Crimean Tatar Congress gathered in the main Crimean city Simferopol said yesterday that Ukraine's integration with the West should not go forward until Kyiv restores Tatar rights.

Congressional delegates, issuing a statement at the end of the three-day session, accused Ukrainian authorities of disregarding the rights of Crimean Tatars, who were deported en masse by Soviet leader Josef Stalin in 1944.

RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service reported that congress member Timur Dagci was among the voices calling for Kyiv to recognize the deportation as genocide:

"Our problem -- the problem of Stalin's genocide of the Crimean Tatar people -- is an undeniable fact, so I believe all countries, the United Nations, and the European Union will recognize it and will decide that it was indeed genocide," Dagci said.

Many Tatars have since returned to Crimea, but have been unable to reclaim valuable land and property that was theirs before the deportations.

The Tatar Congress delegates called on the Council of Europe and the European Union to make Ukraine's possible membership in the EU and World Trade Organization contingent on their recognition of Crimean Tatar rights.

Ethnic persecution

The Belorussians lost their last seat in the Polish Sejm in the general elections of 1935, and the legislation that guaranteed the right of minority communities to have their own schools was repealed in November 1938. The state then involved itself more deeply in religion by attempting to Polonize the Orthodox Church and subordinate it to the government.”

That same year, many Belorussians in Poland who opposed the government's policies were placed in a concentration camp at Byaroza-Kartuzski (Bereza Kartuska, in Polish).

Ever hear of the Polish principality Ukraine?
And Poland got into wars with Cossacks, haidamaks, Ukr.Galician Army and as late as the 1940s with Bandera. But the last 60 years have been the most peaceful with Poland since 11-12th cent. Currently Ukraine has no grievances with Poland. Actually, Romania is even more troublesome for Ukraine than Poland.

"Russia and Ukraine are brothers not cousins.
With brothers like these who needs enemies? :)

The soviets took Ukraine out of a lack of a religion.

The Poles took Ukraine out of an imperial idea that they were better than Ukraine, and their pope was a superior head of the church than Christ who is the head of the Orthodox church.

If Peter Mohila were alive he sure wouldn't be suggesting that Polish or Muslim rule was better than Russian.

1. Soviet leaders especially at times of genocide were mainly NON Russians.

2. The numbers aren't what is important. What is important that just like when the Catholics sacked constaninople, the Poles were doing this for RELIGIOUS reasons.

3. There are Ukranians in crimea right now who are protesting Yushchenko's actions, and they've been doing so since the election!

4. The filioque is heretical, and killing someone for not repeating heresy is plain and simple EVIL.

The Poles on FR do this regurally. They can use racial insults against the Russians, Belarussians, Ukrainians, Crimeans, but you insinuate that they are coming off a bit fascist and suddenly they proclaim that you are anti-pole.

Well Poles backed Yushchenko, and Poland has been trying to takeover Ukraine and force them to covert to Catholicism ever 100 years or so. We're due for another shot soon.

Ukraine as usual will come begging Russia to help.

I wasn’t talking about you or Russia but some other posters like x5452 or jb6. Almost every his post in this thread is anti-polish. The are also anti-Catholic bigots, this is evident even in this thread.

You have no room to call someone a bigot, because both yourself and Spanalot are the biggest bigots I have ever encountered.

Oh sure it's anti catholic to be a little pissed at the regularity with which Poland has tried to murder and arrest anyone of the Orthodox faith in Ukraine, Lithuania, and Belarus.

Most of the folks that defend Russia here on FR are at least located in America, where as most of the anti-Russians on FR are in Poland.
