4U.S. officials have said that four to eight al Qaeda-affiliated "foreigners" were killed in the attack, including some Egyptians. The bodies were quickly removed by accomplices and buried elsewhere, knowledgeable sources have said
Pakistani officials have said that "four or five" foreign fighters were killed in the strike, along with 18 civilians, including five children and five women. Coop comment: 18 seems to keep popping up, as in 18 innocent civilians. Five women and five children can be reasonably assumed to be innocents, leaving us with eight likely terrorists and their supporters. So you can see why the U.S. officials keep coming out with up to eight killed.
5Friday's strike was the third believed to have been carried out since May by CIA-operated Predator drone aircraft in Pakistani tribal lands near the Afghan border. Abu Hamza Rabia, an Egyptian said to have been al Qaeda's No. 3 commander, was killed in December, and a known al Qaeda bombmaker, Haitham al-Yemeni, was killed in May. |
|
Update: the clerics [Mohammed and Ali] returned to lead funeral rites for the victims. Then they came back again to lead a large protest against the allegedly CIA-led sortie.
Mohammed and Ali mobilized around 8,000 armed men to fight US forces after its invasion of Afghanistan following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, Pakistani officials said.
The two are already wanted for harboring terrorists, and the government has outlawed their Islamic group, Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Mohammadi, or Movement for the Enforcement of Islamic Law. In May last year, security forces raided their homes in Hewai, arresting at least a dozen suspected terrorists from Uzbekistan.

Two points:
The size of the footprint in taking out 3 homes makes me wonder if possibly 2 Hellfire missiles were involved.
I want to remind everyone the final score is not known yet. Over the next 3 or 4 days more information will come out.

Good list. It was something like this that brought me to FR -- still trying to figure out who it was, but someone had the list of the 52 most wanted on their profile page and when I googled looking for a current list that came up. LOL!

The size of the footprint in taking out 3 homes makes me wonder if possibly 2 Hellfire missiles were involved. Reports have generally discussed multiple explosions; some have even speculated fixed-wing aircraft may have been involved.

Star, thanks for reminding me to ping Sarge and Allegra, so they can see the consolidated open-source reporting from that "other" area of operations. :-)

Coop, I'm not an accountant or a math teacher, so maybe I don't get it...
If Pakistani officials say 4 or 5 foreign fighters were killed along with 18 civilians, that would be a total of 22-23. And if there were 5 women and 5 children killed, that would leave 12-13 "unclassified" dead folk. So, maybe we killed more bad guys than even the 8 that U.S. officials are talking about?
A girl can wish, anyway.
To: tgslTakoma
Yeah, in the paragraph I listed I can see your confusion. A lot of reports initially listed only 18 casualties. Then some came out with 4-5 dead terrorists included in those 18. Now we're seeing like up above, dead terrorist PLUS 18 innocent civilians. Only I ain't buyin' it. I think 18 people total were killed, but a lot of them weren't so innocent.
