Costa Mesa Boycott Threat(Illegals. Ya gotta read this!)
The Orange County Register ^ | January 19, 2006 | PEGGY LOWE

SANTA ANA – As local law enforcement appealed to Latino leaders Wednesday to help with controversial plans to enforce immigration laws, one Hispanic activist threatened protests in Costa Mesa if the proposals are approved.

Nativo Lopez said if the plans are enacted he will ask Latinos to refuse to cooperate with Costa Mesa police through a campaign of "non-confidence and silence," will launch a boycott of businesses within the city, and will hold a mass march and rally there on President's Day weekend.

Lopez was among several people, including Sheriff Mike Carona and Costa Mesa Police Chief John Hensley, who spoke at a discussion organized by the Orange County Community Forum, an organization of faith, ethnic and grass-roots groups.

Police sweeps are nothing new, Lopez said, but now police and politicians are using fears brought on by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to justify a public policy that they say will help cut crime.

"The fallacy of these arguments about crime and security is that they have been tried before, but previously the anti-immigrant crowd did not have the Twin Towers as their big fig leaf," Lopez said.

Carona and Hensley didn't react to Lopez's threat during the forum. Both asked Latino leaders for help in educating the community on their plans, which they said have been mischaracterized as racial profiling and sweeps aimed at undocumented immigrants.

If you are sending money to Mexico, you can't afford to shop in SC Plaza.

and you can't afford to pay your medical bills, either

9 billion is pocket change compared with the estimated over 20 BILLION the illegals sent back home last year.

Wonder how these poor workers are not only able to thrive in this country, but manage to send extra money back home as well?

Wasn't that an excerpt from the Mexican government's Guide for Immigrants? They can't get their people to sign up to vote in the July 2006 elections, but the public information campaign about the emergency rooms really worked!!

What about the net impact to our economy, for instance? If all of those costs could total more than $9 billion, would you then agree that said solution was worse than the problem.

Hm. Economic cost? AFAIC, you can stick the economic cost in your pipe and smoke it. I'm far more concerned about the cost in human lives, both those of citizens and the poor peons dying in my back yard.

If we do indeed need labor from the South (which I doubt), then I would support an increase in the immigration quotas. However, that is the last step taken. First, we secure the border - not close it, just secure it - and only allow crossings at Ports of Entry. Then, we take the SSAN Verification Program and make it mandatory, just like NICS for firearms purchases. Then, we fine businesses and imprison their owners for knowingly hiring illegals. Finally, when an illegal comes in contact with authorities, that illegal is put into the pipeline for deportation.

Do you have any problems understanding my position now vis-a-vis illegal immigration?

America is only as great as it's "law" abiding citizens. Illegals break the law the second they cross our border. Digest that one..

AND furthermore, what purpose do YOU think that 20 BILLION dollars sent back home by ILLEGALS serves?

It finances the coyotes who bring in more ILLEGALS, over and over again. They send their money "home" to get the rest of their families over here..duh...

We've had enough of so called "debate". Games over...America IS going to win this one, my friend..

No one indivisual is going to write a check to cover EITHER side of the equation.

Every individual writes the check when they pay taxes to cover the cost of illegal acivity. Do you enjoy rewarding illegal behavior? I certainly don't.

I send money to Mexico, and I shop (or, perhaps, shopped) at South Coast Plaza.

I agree there is more than simply "dollars" involved - Matthew 19:6 admonishes us not to break up marriages and families, for instance. Also, I'm not going to go to Mexico even to save you agony because the United States of America is the greatest nation in the history of the world. Sorry you fail to see that the freedom and hope America is to the world is why they all want to come here.

I never had a problem understanding your position in the first place. We simply disagree about the remedies.

And just this afternoon, bin Laden's threatening more attacks in the US. Some of his operatives could have come across the Rio Grande from Mexico. If something goes BOOM out in LA, what will Hispanic illegals do? Run back home?

I must have missed it...did you propose a remedy?

All I recall was negativity, telling us how costly it would be to do anything at all about the problem...

Do you also want to cut off the multi-BILLION $ abortion, porn, and gambling industries?! Those seem to me to be much bigger problems.

well I've said for years now that one more 9/11 type terrorist attack in America and every swinging dick camel jockey will have to pack up bag and Koran and go back to whatever hellhole they originated from.
We have some Muslims up the street who are moving today...guess they got the message!

As far as the illegals go, we don't need no attack to send them packin'...
we just need a leader with the cojones to do it!

America is the SUM TOTAL of all her citizens. While some money is used to get family members over (God forbid YOU were seperated from your wife and children), I suspect most of it is used to prop up the ever-faltering Mexican economy. And, I do trust the America I believe in, the greatest nation on earth that welcomes the poor, tired, huddled masses, yearning to be free, will win this one too - so, you see, we agree on something at least ; )

That was is response to someone who demanded I personally write a NINE BILLION DOLLAR check - we could easily make every illegal immigrant "legal" but short of that, I don't want to reward illegal behavior - is that what you think Ronald Reagan did with amnesty?

In my post #35 to Liz, I pointed out that South Coast Plaza does not want to lose ANY business from it's share of a group that can afford to send $38 BILLION back home, you know, some of home are "working class born-American taxpayers" with Mexican parents who are footing social service bills too - I also posted THIS "remedy": How about increased border enforcement AND increased levels of legal immigration? That sounds like a healthy compromise. And, I do think that more needs to be done to assimilate those already here - that's what has made America great. Any more questions?
