There are probably two private detectives who are considered the leading private eyes for the stars: Former NYPD detective Bo Dietl on the east coast, and Anthony Pellicano on the west coast.
Of the two only one -- Tony Pellicano -- is the subject of an ongoing federal investigation into illegal wiretapping by a high-profile private detective in Hollywood known as The Pelican. Two witnesses -- his ex-girlfriend, and the other police officer -- on Tuesday pleaded guilty to having lied to a grand jury about the detective's use of wiretaps and other illegal tactics.
These pleas, one coming from the former wife of the actor Keith Carradine, add grist for the mill of a criminal case that some suspect will rise into the highest echelons of the Hollywood elite. When the investigation first began, the studio establishment in Los Angeles was on the edge of their seats. Suddenly The Pelican's client list became a list of suspects for the feds.
At the center of this blossoming investigation is Anthony Pellicano. Until the time the police raided his Hollywood offices in 2002, he was hailed as one of the most successful private detectives in the city, with a roster of clients that included A-list actors and some of the industry's most important lawyers who represent Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson and many other showbiz bigwigs.
Pellicano is already in prison on federal charges of possessing explosives and grenades at his office, although he is due to be released on parole next month. So far, the federal government has filed no new charges against him, but federal investigators aren't finished with their widening probe.
The Pelican was also suspected of being retained by Bill and Hillary Clinton as part of their network of goons who harassed women who were considered a political liability for Bill Clinton while he was president. The well-paid private eye may have been involved in the Clintons' clandestine activities such as digging up dirt on those they deemed a threat.
His downfall began in 2002 when a reporter for the Los Angeles Times returned to her automobile one day, to find a fish with a rose painted in its mouth on the roof of the car. She understood the symbolism of the fish as a sign from the Mafia or some wannabe that she would "sleep with the fishes." In addition, the windshield was smashed to make it look like it had been pierced by a bullet. She found a simple written message: "Stop!"
Anita Busch, had been reporting on the case involving the actor Steven Seagal and a purported Mafia operative named Julius Nasso. Police investigators said the fish had been planted by an ex-convict named Alexander Proctor. They charged him and then became suspicious that he had done it at the behest of Pellicano, head of the Pellicano Investigative Agency Ltd.
At that point, armed with warrants, investigators raided the company offices and found more than they had hope for. They found dangerous explosives as well as $200,000 in gold bullion, cash and jewelry. In addition, the investigators found evidence on Pellicano's computers that he was illegally wiretapping people on behalf of his clients. Even more disturbing, they discovered that Pellicano managed to gain access to police data on individuals.
Sandra Carradine, a girlfriend of Pellicano and herself an actress, admitted that Pellicano had secretly wiretapped the telephone of her former husband. Her ex, Keith Carradine, now dates another actress, Hayley DuMond. The illegal wiretaps occurred during a fierce divorce battle over child custody. Sandra told investigators and prosecutors that she will cooperate with their investigation of Pellicano. Her lawyer claims that the reason she first lied when asked about the wiretapping was to protect her boyfriend.
A second guilty plea in the case was from a member of the Beverly Hills Police Department, who admitted that he had lied to the grand jury about illegally accessing files from police data bases and peddling the information to Pellicano.
Officer Craig Stevens resigned from the police force last Friday. He faces over 30 years in prison, while the prison term for Ms. Carradine could reach as much as 10 years.
According to the British newspaper, The Independent, with Ms. Carradine and the ex-police officer now committed to cooperating in the investigation, prosecutors may move swiftly to close the net on the man known as The Pelican. A lawyer for Pellicano insisted this week, however, that his client would maintain his silence, as he has in prison.
"It won't work -- I don't care how much they pressure him," said Victor Sherman. "He's not going to bend."
One of Pellicano's lawyer clients, Bert Fields, continues to maintain that while he has been questioned by investigators, he had no knowledge of any illegal wiretapping.
But the details of the data theft given up by Mr. Stevens may draw Mr. Fields deeper into the affair. He said he sold protected information to Pellicano concerning a former Hollywood producer and gubernatorial candidate in Nevada named Aaron Russo, as well three of his relatives. Mr. Russo was being sued at the time by a New York asset manager, who had hired Mr. Fields, according to The Independent.
A lawyer representing Mr. Fields, John Keker, said his client was in the clear. "Bert Fields is completely innocent of any wrongdoing," he said. That remains to be seen.
While New York City's Bo Dietl is an upstanding private investigator and security manager with tremendous credibility here and abroad, his counterpart in Los Angeles is the stereotypical sleazy private eye, perhaps as sleazy as the folks who hire him including the Clintons. How ironic it is that Bill and Hillary have so much in common with Hollywood crowd; including their chose for a private eye.
Perhaps to be the arkancider arkancided?

Washington Weekly: "The Clinton White House has its agents scouring the country digging up dirt on the 24-year-old girl who made claims of a sexual involvement with Bill Clinton. The old Bimbo Eruption Swat Team has gone into overdrive, recruiting private investigator Anthony Pellicano, whose last claim to Clinton damage control fame was his "scientific determination" that the Gennifer Flowers tapes had been edited. (An independent laboratory analysis later confirmed their unedited authenticity) Now Pellicano has resurrected Monica Lewinsky's old drama coach, who did his own Gennifer Flowers number on her just minutes before Clinton's State of the Union Address."

Hillary's Private Eye Arrested in Reporter Intimidation Case
Rush Limbaugh newsgroup:
A California private detective who worked to discredit Clinton Sexgate accusers Monica Lewinsky and Gennifer Flowers has been arrested in connection with attempts to intimidate a reporter for the Los Angeles Times after the FBI caught him with an arsenal of explosives.
Anthony J. Pellicano was arrested Thursday after a search of his office by a dozen FBI agents turned up an "array of explosives," reported New York's Daily News on Saturday.
In February, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton was alleged to have hired Pellicano in 1992 in an attempt to discredit Gennifer Flowers' claims of a twelve year affair with Mr. Clinton.
The episode bears an eerie resemblance to the account of Clinton sex-accuser Sally Perdue, who told the London Telegraph in 1994 that after she was threatened with physical violence, her car windshield was broken and spent shotgun shell was left on the seat. Perdue abruptly relocated to China a few months after talking to the Telegraph, shortly after Paula Jones sued Mr. Clinton for sexual harassment.
Though Pellicano's name never surfaced in connection with Perdue's allegations, he reportedly played a key role in attempts to discredit both Monica Lewinsky and Gennifer Flowers.
Four days after the Lewinsky story broke in Jan. 1998, ex-Lewinsky boyfriend Andy Bleiler came forward with the claim that she had stalked him. The Washington state school teacher also contended that Lewinsky wanted to become a White House intern so she could perform oral sex on then-President Clinton. "I'm going to Washington to get my presidential knee pads," Bleiler's lawyer, Terry Giles, quoted Lewinsky as saying.
"Anthony Pellicano, the L.A.-based private investigator and O.J. defense team veteran [was] responsible for digging up Andy Bleiler," the New York Post's Andrea Peyser reported days later.
Sexgate provocatuer Lucianne Goldberg told Peyser that Pellicano's services were bought and paid for by the Clinton White House. When Peyser confronted the Los Angeles private detective with Goldberg's claim, he didn't deny it. "You're a smart girl. No comment," Pellicano told the Post reporter.
Digging up Bleiler's "presidential kneepads" story wasn't the first time Pellicano had gone to bat for the Clintons. According to Ron Kessler's 1995 best-seller, "Inside the White House," Clinton's first presidential campaign relied on Pellicano's expertise in the field of audio analysis to discredit Gennifer Flowers' smoking gun tapes. "The Clinton camp made much of the fact that Anthony J. Pellicano, an expert on audio recording analysis, had told the press that a twelve-minute portion of the tape of conversations between Flowers and Clinton had been 'selectively edited' at two points," Kessler reported.
To counter Pellicano's claims, Flowers submitted her recordings to Truth Verification Labs, which found them to be 100 percent authentic. In 1999 Flowers filed a defamation suit against Clinton campaign officials James Carville and George Stephanopoulos - along with then-first lady Hillary Clinton - based on their attempts to use Pellicano's analysis to discredit her.
During a February court appearance, the head of Flowers' legal team, Judicial Watch Chairman Larry Klayman, told the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, "Anthony Pellicano was a private investigator hired by Mrs. Clinton herself. And he's the one who did the analysis of the tapes."
Of the more than two dozen media reports on Pellicano's Thursday arrest so far, none have mentioned his ties to the Clinton attack machine.

Hillary's Private Eyes
A significant portion of the Shadow Team's operations were carried out by private investigators, among them: Terry Lenzner, founder and chairman of the powerful Washington, D.C., detective firm Investigative Group International; high-ticket San Francisco private eye Jack Palladino and his wife Sandra Sutherland; and Hollywood sleuth Anthony J. Pellicano.
Former congressional investigator Barbara Olson writes that, "In the political life of the Clintons, it was she [Hillary] who pioneered the use of private detectives. It was she who brought in and cultivated the professional dirt-diggers and smear artists."
Hillary's detectives engaged in "a systematic campaign to intimidate, frighten, threaten, discredit and punish innocent Americans whose only misdeed is their desire to tell the truth in public," former Clinton adviser Dick Morris charged in the New York Post of Oct. 1, 1998.
Hillary's secret police tend to be a tight-lipped bunch, professionally skilled at keeping a low profile. However, we know more about Anthony "The Pelican" Pellicano than about most Hillary operatives, thanks to his boastfulness and taste for the limelight. Pellicano's violent career as a private investigator reveals much about the sorts of qualifications Hillary sought in her Shadow Team.

Dietl hangs with Don Imus. So he can't be all good.
In re Aaron Russo, also "wiretapped" by Pellicano: In 1998 he was running for Governor of Nevada as a Republican against D-Harry Reid, who won the race for governor in Nevada.
Aaron Russo is a Libertarian; but ran as a Republican against Reid.
Aaron Russo ran as a Libertarian in the 2004 Presidential Election. In an article authored by David Paul Kuhn, CBSNews.com Chief Political Writer, wrote: "President Bush may face an even greater third-party threat from the right wing. The Libertarian Party nominee could cost Mr. Bush his job in 2004".
Mr. Russo's stances:
Supports the immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, and encourages the Iraqi people to become self-reliant.
Supports the immediate repeal of the USA Patriot Act.
Supports cutting both spending and taxes.
Supports medical marijuana.
Supports weakening the control of the IRS and the Federal Reserve over the economy.
Strongly opposes gun control; was considered by a few to be a possible recipient of NRA backing should George W. Bush sign the extension of the federal assault weapons ban
My memory is dinging me on another score. Pellicano and two other names of employed-by-Democrats-Democrats were employed / used by Clinton Admin. They were connected. And I can't immediately seize upon that name.
Bing! Terry Lenzner, 1998.
snips:
Terry Lenzner's CIA connection
-->snip:
President Clinton relies so much on private investigators to dig up dirt on political enemies, it's said he has his own private CIA. But an offhand remark by Terry Lenzner -- the super-sleuth most often hired by Clinton's attorneys to do the dirt-digging -- reveals there's more than a little truth to that quip.
In a sworn deposition, the former Senate Watergate Committee attorney turned gumshoe admitted at least one significant connection to the Central Intelligence Agency. Lenzner is apparently so well-connected to the CIA that, in an hour of need, the agency turned to him for help in shielding one of its most notorious employees from public scrutiny.
On March 13, Lenzner was deposed by Larry Klayman of Judicial Watch in connection with Filegate: the White House confiscation of over 900 FBI files on Bush and Reagan administration employees

That wasn't the specific article I was looking for. Here it is:
Richard Poe (nice photo of Jim Robinson at this link):
--snips:
"Some of the White House `secret police' were private detectives, such as Terry Lenzner, Jack Palladino and Anthony Pellicano. Others were Clinton loyalists embedded in federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies such as the FBI, the CIA, the IRS, the NTSB and so on. Many of these people are still in place, and still doing the Clintons dirty work. I call them the Shadow Team."
Prominent among the "White-House-orchestrated lawsuits" described in my book is the action brought against Jim Robinson and FreeRepublic.com in 1998 ostensibly for copyright infringement by the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times. The lawsuit, which nearly put FreeRepublic out of business, was stage-managed by Debevoise & Plimpton, a law firm notorious for its intimate ties to the Clinton political machine and to known operatives of Hillary's Shadow Team such as Terry Lenzner.
--end of snips
And a FReep Link, at onset of this investigation. According to this 2003 article, Mr. Fields HIRED Pellicano. But now says he didn't "know" nuttin'?
That's it -- Jack Palladino was the other name I was looking for.
It's a death wish if he does. He's been McDoogled.
I am sure the klintons have "people" on the inside
Bump
You're welcome, and thanks for the info. Talk about a tangled web!
While single a few years back, I chatted online and on the phone with a woman who escaped from the Hollywood culture, took a real job, and was settling down. With the things she related about her childhood and young adult years, it's a wonder that she recovered.
Spoke with a friend of recently who is also an escapee from Hollywood. Asked her if she ever thought of going back. She shivered, audibly, on the phone: Never!
I don't see any reference to Pellicano in this article. (Not doubting it's veracity...in fact, I own and have read Sellout. Just not sure if it's a Pellicano story)
. . .but would there be even a 'shred of evidence' of the dirty doings on behalf of the Clinon's. . .or even anyone brave enough to talk about it?
Would love for some interviewer. . .should Hillary get close to one; ask just what her professional relationship to Pelicano has been; over the years. . .
Maddening that no one in the MSM can connect the Pellicano-Hillary dots. Wonder if Tony knows anything about Vince?
Yeah, can he get any more obvious?
A lawyer for Pellicano insisted this week, however, that his client would maintain his silence, as he has in prison. "It won't work -- I don't care how much they pressure him," said Victor Sherman. "He's not going to bend."
Use a bullhorn, whydontcha? Not that that should buy you any peace of mind, Pelican Boy. Even if you manage a long life, you'll never get more than 20 minutes of sleep at a time. Tough break.
He's probably so close to sleeping with the fishes himself that air bubbles are already coming out of his mouth.
Leni
Wonder if Pellicano has anything to do with the redacted bits in the Barrett Report? Just curious.
Not if he wants to remain near 98.6
