House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., and Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif, left, appear at a news conference on Capitol Hill Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, to discuss plans to clean up tranished relations between lawmakers and lobbyists. House Republicans moved to seize the initiative for ethics reform Tuesday with a comprehensive package of changes, including the banning of privately sponsored travel like that arranged by convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The Democrats wouldn't know the high ground even should they somehow find their way to it.

Democrats know all about "high ground". It's where they run to while their girlfriend drowns in the car. Ask Teddy.

I think the only way they know how to get to it is currently "illegal."

We the people, could end up winners in all this posturing. If the two parties try to out-reform each other hard enough, something good could come of it. :):)

Is this a news story or an editorial? Bottom line, the Republicans got out in front of the dems on this issue and no matter what the dems do or say, the second the Republicans pass a reform package the second the dems lose the issue. Look for the dems to try and slow this down any way they can.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said that while the Abramoff scandal was largely "a Republican sin," because the lobbyist was closely aligned with top Republicans, "neither party has a monopoly on virtue."

---

Nice try at damage control, Senator.

Time and the courts and sworn testimony will help us see how "largely "Republican"" this little affair truly was.

Probably about as much as the House Bank 'Rubbergate" affair was all Republican as well.

Every time Congress decides to reform itself, we the people end up losing some more of our tattered rights to free speech, assembly and redress of grievances. "Lobbying reform" will be no different.

measures to bar members of Congress from accepting gifts, meals and travel from lobbyists.

If this were to pass, Bill Clinton will have to stop traveling around the world at the expense of the shareholders of almost every company.

The law of unintended consequences.

Yeah, but from what I've seen lately, neither do the Republicans.
I love this "Help us keep ourselves from accepting graft". No one with any integrity or character is left in our goober-mint, they are all a bunch of corrupt low-life POS's

Eliminate tax concessions for businsses and you eliminate 75% of the need for lobbiests. Hit 'em in the purse.

High ground to them is where they are outside the survey of any controlling legal authority.

I fear you are right, but will hope for the best.

You're putting me on, right? Most hear remember Mary Jo Kopechne who was left to drown in Teddy's Olsmobile while he high-tailed it out of there until he had time to sober up and have his aides make up a good story. Young girl dead - fat drunken Ted goes on to give speeches to others about how the things they do "trouble" him.

Are you too young to remember any of this? Try "googling" for Chappaquidick (sp?) I believe the year was 1969
