Sen. Kennedy Severs Ties to Harvard Club By ANDREW MIGA, Associated Press Writer Tue Jan 17, 3:14 PM ET
WASHINGTON - Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), who criticized Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito's past membership in a controversial Princeton University alumni club, severed his ties Tuesday with a former Harvard college social club that bans women members.
"He has decided to be taken off their rolls, believing that it is a mistake to continue to be affiliated," Kennedy spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner said in a statement.
The Massachusetts Democrat, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, grilled Alito during Senate confirmation hearing last week about Alito's ties to the Concerned Alumni of Princeton, an alumni group that opposed the admission of women and minorities at the Ivy League School.
A Washington Times story about Kennedy's Owl Club ties last week sparked criticism from Republicans who branded Kennedy a hypocrite.
Kennedy joined the Owl Club when he was a student at Harvard. Though not an active member since college, he donated about $100 to the club last October, his office said Tuesday.
Kennedy has sent a letter to the club asking for his name to be removed from all official documents.
"Senator Kennedy joined Harvard's Owl Club in 1954, a social organization similar to a fraternity, before women were admitted to the campus and long before they were integrated into campus life," Wagoner said.
Harvard ended its ties with the all-male club and others like it in 1984.
"While we are glad Ted Kennedy has decided to get on the equality bandwagon, it's laughable given that his revelation comes less than a week after his hypocritical attacks on Judge Alito,"
Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said Tuesday.
Kennedy's spokeswoman said the Owl Club was primarily a social club, while the Princeton group actively supported excluding women and minorities from the school.
"There is absolutely nothing in common between this social club and an organization like CAP that was established to push a political agenda to prohibit women and minorities from attending Princeton," Wagoner said. "No one can question Senator Kennedy's lifelong commitment to fighting for civil rights, equality and justice."
But of course, the "date" murderer waited another 22 years. Sort of like waiting till the next day to report to the police that you've killed the bimbo you were transporting for immoral purposes.
This schmuck will do whatever it takes to get re-elected. It just simply amazes me that the good people of Mass obviously see value in this fat old fool? Teddy is a prime example of why term limits are necessary.......
True, the Owl club banned women (probably minorities as well?) entirely, while CAP only wanted them to meet the same academic standards as men.
Harvard should have severed ties with Ted Kennedy half a century ago when he was caught cheating on a Spannish exam.
Next, Ted announces he is taking lifeguard lessons.
This is that club that he does NOT belong to, but just sends $100/ year to, for some unknown reason? 'Large, misshapen head.' (Kennedy in Gaelic).
As someone else remarked:
Yes, Teddy's Harvard Club was all-male, but that was just to protect women...
Ask Mary Jo about Kennedy's skill at severing ties.
I can, thank you very much.
Kennedy's really slipping off the deep end lately. The student-who-wasn't-really-visited-by-the-secret-service but that-just-proved-Bush-is-infringing-on-our-civil-liberties even-though-its-not-true (???), the Alito hearings, the use of a satire piece to lambast a NOMINEE of the SUPREME COURT!!!
There's gotta be more.
CAUGHT!
Teddy just noticed for the first time in 20 or more years that there weren't any women in the club. I guess they saw his name on the roster and ran away as fast as they could.
Yes, he likes to severe them so they take hours and hours as the water rises higher and higher. Let her think about it a long time. Don't mess with Teddy, ladies.
Why didn't ole tedddeeee go on national TV and renounce his membership???????? Did it through a spokesman? What a loser. An absolutel loser!
"No one can question Senator Kennedy's lifelong commitment to fighting for civil rights, equality and justice."
We certainly CAN and we DO! Otherwise why would he have joined a club like that? Hmmmmmmmm?

Like he actually believes that anyone with sense CARES if he was in some exclusive club? He's out...of...touch.
ROFL.....
I thought teddy was expelled from Harvard for cheating.
If Bill had referred to "intrinsic aptitude", his word would be enshrined in NOW brochures and feminist tattoos.
