NUEVO LAREDO - Two young men died in a hail of bullets over the weekend, keeping the Sister City at a rate of nearly one homicide per day since the start of the New Year.
Police identified the victims as Leopoldo Moreno García, 21, and Eleazar Muñoz Pérez, 20, both of Nuevo Laredo.
Residents of the Palacios neighborhood on the city's west side called C-4, the city's emergency headquarters, at about 11 p.m. Saturday to report sounds of gunfire.
When police arrived, they found Moreno García lying dead in the street on Avenida Antonio Medina, between Venezuela and Lincoln streets. He was wearing blue jeans and a black belt.
He had been shot at least 10 times and was taken to a local funeral home.
Meanwhile, Muñoz Pérez already had been taken by friends in a private vehicle to Hospital General in critical condition.
Efforts to revive Muñoz Pérez were unsuccessful, and he died several hours later.
Investigators recovered numerous shell casings at the scene of a caliber normally used in the weapon known as a "cuerno de chivo."
It was unclear what the young men had been doing at the time of the attack, and no explanation about a possible motive for the shooting had been made public as of Monday.
More than 12 people have died violently in the first two weeks of the year.
No arrests have been made in any of the cases, and there has been some dispute as to which agency is responsible for investigating many of the homicides involving weapons that the general public is prohibited from using.
