Good morning, Madame Chancellor.
Here you are, Germany's Angela Merkel, on your first trip to Washington, D.C., preparing for your meeting with President Bush. As you look out of your Blair House window over Lafayette Square toward the White House, consider the historicity of the era: the beginning of Mr. Bush's fifth year leading his country, and the beginning of your first year leading your country in the so-called War on Terror. Or is that the War on Guantanamo Bay? I get them confused.
That's because in just about every account of your American trip -- biggish news in Europe -- it is prominently mentioned that Guantanamo Bay is prominently high on your list of, well, prominent concerns. Trouble spots. Global things you lose sleep over.

Let her appease the masses at home. This is a nonsense issue she is beating. She will change nothing and knows it, but by taking a "position" she dissipates some of the pressure on her.
In ALL fundamental issues of national security Merkel will back us. Look at Iran! Schroeder was already ripping that pie-hole open during the elections in 2005 and playing the anti-war anti-US game. Merkel represents a pragmatic security policy. She is more than just an ally - she's a friend!
She probably lost the elections in 2002 BECAUSE she stood on our side while Schroeder beat the anti-US war drum. Even in 2005 Schroeder played the game and the SPD had posters of flag draped US caskets stating "She would have sent troops."
Do you expect her to commit political suicide? Let her pick at something which is near superfluous. Its a mundane, a benign issue in reality. Where it matters shes on our side.

Good reply, Red 6. I know she has to appease her countrymen, but I feel she could have held her tongue on this and kept to the business at hand. Your comment, though, is respected and thoughtful.
