A preliminary hearing is scheduled Tuesday for an Escondido couple accused of beating to death the woman's 2-year-old son in what a police investigator called the worst case of child abuse he's ever seen. Jose Maurice Castenada, 21, could face the death penalty if convicted of murder and a special circumstance allegation of torture in the death of Cesar Razo last June 25. Castenada and the child's mother, 23-year-old Maria Razo, were arrested shortly after the toddler died of cardiac arrest at Palomar Medical Center. Prosecutor Lucille Weismantel said in court documents that the defendants regularly assaulted the child and his then-5-year-old sister after they began living on Bear Valley Parkway in October 2004. The children were choked and struck with hangers, belts, a cable and the defendants' hands, Weismantel wrote. The toddler was also made to live and sleep in a bedroom closet, according to the prosecutor. Swabs for DNA testing were taken from red stains found in the closet and a bathtub, among other places, according to court documents. Weismantel alleged that on the day the boy died, Castenada became enraged when the child was heard crying in a closet. He beat the child, strangled him into unconsciousness and kicked him in the head and stomach, the prosecutor alleged. The child died about a half-hour after arrival at the hospital. During their arraignment last July, Judge Aaron Katz ordered dental X-rays and impressions to be taken from the defendants because bite marks were allegedly found on the victim's arm during an autopsy. Escondido police Sgt. Chris Wynn said the number and severity of the toddler's injuries made it the worst case of child abuse he's seen in his career. The defendants are being held without bail because they're allegedly in the country illegally.
Death Penalty! Death Penalty! Death Penalty!
Amen.

This beautiful boy is in a much better place now...
There are no words.
Death Penalty.
I'll see your $50 and raise you $50! Everyone knows Mexico doesn't allow the death penalty. Not even for cockroaches like these!
Are the defendants Mexican? Why would Mexico give a cr*p? I dont know about the Hispanic "groups", since most of them tend to be liberal, but I'll bet most hispanics would want these people put to death painfully.
I'm sure the liberals will be out in full force to defend them from the death penalty.
Someone who could do that to a helpless child, let alone their own offspring, is not human by my definition. Ergo, they should be treated like the rabid animals they are and put down quickly. Unfortunately this is in CA. 25 years from now the libs will be whining about how cruel and unusual their upcoming executions are.
I was wondering the same thing.
Yes, and why wait?
In the immortal words of Daffy Duck: "Shoot 'im NOW!, Shoot 'im NOW!"
There's nothing funny about this story or the headline which, as written, states that the child was beaten to death in court.
During Saturday's football games, one of the announcers said, "Washington scored on a field goal after a fumble by Jon Hall."
And, I thought to myself, what the hell is Jon Hall doing handling the ball? Oh, Washington scored on Hall's field goal, after a fumble.
Never mind.
Then, again, after all we've seen in the past 6 or 7 years, what is Hall doing kicking the ball?
Heh... I just copied the title... I don't make the headlines, thank goodness! :P I think they meant to say that they appeared in court.
Indeed!
Not to mention that now, my tax dollars have to go to house and feed these monsters. I agree, they are NOT human. Unfortunately, this is becoming more and more of an issue. These reports come almost daily in SoCal, and it is almost always Hispanics. :(
There it was, at the bottom of the article. Missed it. I still think most real hispanics would want these two dead.
Too bad they didn't "resist" at the time of the arrest....
