If you think about it, the distrust probably goes back AT LEAST to the crusades.

Yes, that's true for their distrust of the western world. However, their distrust specifically of the USA probably began with the Barbary pirates.

Personally, I'm not in the least bit troubled by their distrust of us, because as far as I'm concerned the feeling's mutual.

yeah I don't really care either.

I can't remember who said it (it might have been Caesar for all I can remember): "Let them hate, so long as they fear".

Might be a little outdated, but yet some in the Islamic world still think and act like it's 1506 instead of 2006....
