Ted Kennedy told fellow Democrat Charles Schumer to "take the lead in the grilling of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
And the congressman from New York could parlay his prominent position on the committee into what Washington insiders say is his ultimate goal: The Senate Democratic leadership position.
On the Thursday before the confirmation hearings began, Schumer gave a speech outlining the Democrats plan for questioning Alito. A few hours earlier, Kennedy had done the same.
But Kennedys briefing "had not gone well, a report in New York Magazine reveals. "Kennedy, looking tired and haggard, said in error that the Democrats had abandoned any thought of filibustering Alito.
Schumers speech, on the other hand, was "sharp and focused, the magazine reports, reinforcing "a sense, already growing, of a generational shift of leadership taking place on the committee. When Schumer was asked if he thought he was inheriting Kennedys mantle, he said: "No, Im not. Im not as liberal as he is. But he added: "He has basically said to me, You take the lead.
During the hearings, Schumer was the shining light among Democratic interrogators, while his party mates on the committee revealed themselves as "befuddled, toothless gasbags, according to New York Magazine.
But the magazine article wasnt totally complimentary of Schumer, head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
It quoted one former Senate staffer as saying: "He has the smarts, he has the staff, he has the legal background. But hes more worried about how he looks than if hes going to win, and hes more concerned about how he sounds than if he makes his point.

LMAO!!! Schumer came off as a boy among men in those hearings.
He just looked way out of his depth.
I suppose that certainly qualifies the little weasel as a Democrat "leader".
To: kddid
Schumer - another Dem pant load choosing to rule in hell rather than serve in heaven. Too bad Teddy didn't tell Chuckie to "take the wheel".

"Oddly, the only word that comes to mind when I hear Schumer's name is -- icky. Must be some repressed childhood memory. That's odd!
The first thing that pops up in my mind is the word SLIMEBALL!

That's why I said he was the obvious choice -- he cannot lose votes in New York.
To: Grut
Whadda, you crazy or sumpin'? Schumer running the Senate Democrats is a Republican wet dream! Freepers' only question should be "how can we help?"
Exactly. My New York neighbors may be liberal enough to elect C. Montgomery Schumer, but the rest of the country won't be able to stand him. And there's that whole Steele credit report thing in Maryland. He'd annoy 3/4 of the country - and has baggage to boot.

You're taking this thread off on a

him talk a lot but him not so hot.

A coworker told me Schumer looks like he needs a good scrubbing.

"I didn't realize his leadership was so tenuous. I figure he was a compromise candidate any way between the left and the right with in the Democrat Party."
Excuse me! There is no compromise between the left and the left leaning. There is no right in the party!
List the names in the dem Senate and check their voting record. That says it all!
Sorry, but this allusion to sane thinkers just got stuck in my throat.

What perfect face for the Dems. Schumer's oily, smarmy, ambulance chasing, shit-eating grin, peering over his reading glasses, tilting his head forward just enough to show off his discount hair plugs. That should count for at least 5 house seats in fly over country.
