The Federal and New South Wales Governments have nominated Sydney's Opera House for World Heritage listing.

The governments have signed a joint nomination that will be sent to the World Heritage Centre in Paris, pending a decision mid next year.

New South Wales Minister for Arts and Environment Bob Debus says if the nomination is successful the Opera House will be the state's first building to join the list.

"Our nomination argues that the Sydney Opera House is an outstanding conjunction of architecture and engineering, a turning point in the modern architectural movement, an exceptional engineering feat."

Has anyone considered how the Sydney Harbour Bridge is going to feel about this?

There's nothing worse than a p*ssed off bridge!

Isn't this "world heritage" designation a bad thing?

What's surprising is that it's not already on the list.

It's just a bloody w*nk! It means you can't pull it down, paint it or otherwise buggerize around with it.

Bloody French do it. We ALL know what they're like.

SCREW THE FROGS!!!

That beast is one of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen, and I live in Houston, so I know from ugly buildings.

How can you say such a thing...it's Sydney's pride and joy :)

(Not that anyone could ever justifiably accuse Sydney of having any taste at all...)

Basically the Sydneysiders are jealous of Melbourne - Melbourne and Sydney have a pretty fierce rivalry and in 2004 the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne became Australia's first World Heritage listed building.

The residents of Sydney feel that the Opera House is far better known overseas than the REB (and they are quite correct) and so they are somewhat annoyed that the REB currently has primacy as Australia's most significant structure.

The REB, among other things, was the site of the first sitting of the Australian Parliament in 1901. Historically, it's more significant than the Opera House.

I've no problem with the Opera House being recognised as well - but this is coming up now, when it hasn't in the past, primarily because of the recognition of the REB.
