January 15, 2006 -- "There is truth, and that is all that matters."
So goes the mantra - repeated every other page or so - in James Frey's best-selling, Oprah-touted memoir, "A Million Little Pieces," in which he portrays himself as a scum-of-the-earth, drug-dealing outlaw who finds redemption in a rehab clinic.
But the scribe - who was exposed last week for exaggerating his criminal past - has in fact lived a privileged life.
Born in Cleveland to a well-to-do family, he moved to St. Joseph, Mich., at age 12, when his father, Bob, was named assistant general counsel for Whirlpool Corp.
His parents were loving and happily married, pals said.
"They're great people. Kind, generous and supportive," family friend Donna Dumketold The Post.
But the 36-year-old author now paints a picture of an unhappy childhood....."

Will he care? He's made a mint, and has a core group that will stick by him forever. He's a con artist, but will it cost him anything? Probably not.
I read a six page expose about him and his book the other day; the only thing that's true is that he wrote a book, as far as I can tell.
As Tom Cruise would say, "It's truthiness, and that's all that matters."
I doubt he is as big on the lecture circuit.
Seems measuring of another's unhappiness is basically pointless. (I know some very happy parents whose kids are not. . .) And let us remember the 'Reagan children'. . .
And so what if he was a spoiled brat. . .kids doing drugs are not genuinely happy for long. . .and so his story begins. . .as for the lies; half-truths and innuendos; the only one I really care about. . .is 'did he have two root canals without anesthesia. . .or not. . .
Bottom line; he is probably a Liberal and maybe he read Hillary's lying memoir as well. . .and figured his would be a whole lot more interesting and valuable.
And nobody going after Hillary. . .
Fake but accurate.
Stephen Glass' buddies still post on Slate.
They find subtle ways to defend him, even now.
he conned oprah, so he's ok in my book :)
Ophrah signs onto any story that tugs on the heartstrings and
her demented followers eat it up and she rakes in the cash.
I know someone who was a counselor at Hazelden for twenty years, and he says Frey's description of the place is "plain not-very-believable fiction."
Sounds to me like Frey was never even at Hazelden, which would mean the entire book was a sham
It's not the facts that matter, it's the seriousness of the accusations.
I checked out the oprah.com message board on this subject to see what readers think. I have to say it was 95 to 5 against Oprah and Frey. His and Oprahs only defenders also had this ability to link LYING to President Bush and Iraq and how many Bush has killed.
I don'tse how they can be linked but hence this is the lapse in the liberal brain.
Rigoberta Menchu wote a work of fiction claiming it was true and got a Nobel Prize...perhaps Mr. Frey will get one too.
Leftist liars are allowed to do that.
