Manning in governor's race 'for the long haul' (NY)

STATE Assemblyman Patrick Manning says he's in "for the long haul" in the race for governor.

Manning, R-East Fishkill, made his candidacy official on Thursday. He's vying for both the Republican and Conservative lines in the November election.

He's particularly interested in the latter.

"I'm going to run if I receive the state Conservative Party endorsement," he said.

Some 15 county conservative chairmen across New York, including Columbia County's, have endorsed the six-term assemblyman during the past several months, and Manning said he expects to receive more support in the days ahead.

Manning is among five Republicans considered as possible candidates for governor. The others are B. Thomas Golisano, a Rochester businessman who has run unsuccessfully in the past as independent; former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, who now lives in New York; John Faso, a former assemblyman from Columbia County who now works as a lobbyist; and Randy Daniels, a former New York secretary of state.

The state's current governor, Republican George Pataki, has decided not to seek a fourth term. The only declared Democrat is state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, though Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi is considering getting into the race.

It's unlikely Manning would win the governor's race if he secures only the Conservative line. And any candidacy for governor would preclude him from seeking re-election to the Assembly.

"I have a lot to lose, but I think I have more to lose if I don't stand up to some of the principles the Republican Party has stood for," he said. "I think I'm the only one who believes in tax cuts and spending restraints, and I have the record to back me up."

Possible GOP contenders for Manning's Assembly seat if it opens up are Dutchess County Legislature Chairman Bradford Kendall and county Legislator Marc Molinaro, who also serves as Tivoli's mayor.

Molinaro has twice rejected the idea of challenging Manning in a GOP primary but said he would "seriously consider" running for the seat this fall.

Kendall said he would consider running if Manning is not in the race.

For a second there, I thought that Eli decided to give up on his football career.

Sad, but true. Hope that Archie gives his kid some pointers in the off season.
