All of what follows is from a press release from Senate majority leader Frists office:
With the continued uncertainty over whether the minority will keep to a timeframe of voting, up or down, on Judge Alito on Friday, January 20, Senator Frist today made the following announcements to his Senate Republican colleagues on an afternoon conference call:
· Whenever the Judiciary Committee reports out the Alito nomination, the full Senate will begin work on the nominee the next business day.
· If Democrats delay final action past January 20th, he will cancel the recess for the week of January 23rd which he had previously scheduled with the knowledge of Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).
· Until the Senate votes, up or down, on the Alito nomination, he will not act on any other legislative item.
Frist made the following statement regarding his decision:
"Nothing right now is more key than the Senate voting, up or down, on the nomination of Judge Alito. I will keep the Senate at work and focused on the Alito nomination until we are done. Judge Alito, his family and the American people deserve a prompt and fair up or down vote on the Senate floor. When it comes to any delay in Judge Alitos nomination, a Justice delayed will not be a Justice denied."
Frist is now the GOP's Poster Boy for the 98 pound weakling.
He makes Bob Square Pants seem like the Terminator.
To match the size of her thighs.........
Specter pointed out at the end of the hearings today, that they already got their week delay. The committee meets again starting Monday the 17th. TO VOTE.
Leahy was trying to get an super-long holiday, following the 17th, to get the demo staffers back in place....haha.
It's very simple.
The RINO's undercut Frist before. The RINO's are backing him now. Because of that support, Frist can play hardball.
The bulk of the reason Frist hasn't hung the Dems out to dry is because his own party wasn't supporting him. In turn, this is the type of tough politics that can exist when RINO's join their Party and lay down the law as one caucus.
As much complaint as there has been, justifiably to extent, that he has been ineffective as a Leader, it's tough to lead when you have Mavericks intent on staking out their bi-partisanship with Democrats by stabbing our agenda in the back.
Frist has never been our enemy, though, and now that the Dems know the RINO's are onboard they have to take Frist seriously because Frist WILL follow through on these threats.
And I like the idea of cutting their recess. I say they cut their weekends, recess, Senate paychecks, everything until they do their jobs and vote on Alito, Pass the Patriot Act, continue the tax cuts...
I just saw a thread about the House vote to replace Delay...that said that Pres. Bush wanted the vote taken before the SOTU address...so it wouldn't be hanging in the air during the speech...but,
according to the Novak column...Hastert can't get any of the House members to come back from their VACATION to deal with it...
AMAZING...how many of us could tell our bosses NO..if asked to come in during an emergency???...and considering that these people work for US...I think we need to FIRE all of them.
What about a movement to replace EVERY SINGLE CONGRESSCRITTER..wouldn't that be delicious??
I'm seeing it, I'm believing it.
Whoa! Nice review of the situation. Concise.
Light travels faster than sound, which is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak!
I would warn--A RINO is a RINO. They can never be trusted. LOL
But from everything I've seen to point, they are onboard over this nomination in a fashion of committment I haven't seen from them before. For now, Frist is secure in his support and Specter seems determined to make the Dems regret challenging his authority.
... Leahy said he was willing to discuss the possibility of delaying the committee vote for less than a week. Starting the Senate debate Jan. 24 or 25 would still accommodate President George W. Bush's desire to get Alito confirmed before his Jan. 31 State of the Union address, the senator said.
Specter said he was willing to delay the committee vote by two days.
From your quote: "Leahy said he was willing to discuss the possibility of delaying...."
Sorry Bloomberg/Leahy YOU don't have the prerogative.
The Rats know it is game, set, match. The delay requested is for fund raising purposes only. So many promises were made as to how hard they would fight.
It is tragic to watch a once great party reduced to this poor excuse of the opposition. I firmly believe this country is better off with a two-party system, but the Rats are becoming the party of special interest only and will one day cease to be a worthy opponent.
The last several State of the Union messages, only Justice Breyer has attended. He was the junior justice in tenure, although that may not have anything to do with his attendance. I'm not at all aware whether the Court's involvement in deciding the 2000 election in Bush v. Gore has anything to do with the apparent boycott by all but the junior justice as a seemingly token representative. Certainly, several justices used to attend.
Excellent.
"Maybe there is no other business need to be done by the Senate."
Has the Patriot Bill been renewed?
It isn't the first time that a party has gone down in our history. It will be interesting to see what rises from the ashes.
I can remember a conversation I had with a good friend who happened to be a democrat, in about 1998. I told her that if the party followed the Clinton's lead....it would lead to their demise. Her answer? It's all about the money, honey, and the Clinton's have brought that to us.
I don't really speak to that friend much anymore, but all I can say now, is......I told you so.
No. Balls would be if he ceased all Senate action after the SCHEDULED time for the Judicial Committee vote, not whenever the Democrats get around to voting him out of conference.
