A recent poll shows the born-again "moderate" Republican governor has gained back some popularity, especially in the Bay Area, and is now in a dead heat with Democratic competitors.
"Our survey demonstrates that Schwarzenegger's retreat from the more conservative rhetoric and agenda he brandished during the latter part of 2005 has paid off among middle-of-the road voters," said Melinda Jackson, director of the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State University.
The governor's job performance rating among voters in a Democrat-leaning state has climbed from 36 percent positive and 53 percent negative in September, to 40 percent positive and 51 percent negative this month.

The RINOs did it first.
Not completely. Not yet.
If Arnold's not re-elected, what do you think the chances of McClintock are for Lt Gov?
GOVERNOR LOSES 19% OF REPUBLICAN BASEhttp://www2.sjsu.edu/spri/06survey/calpoliticalrelease1.pdf
Support for Schwarzeneggers re-election has dropped since September when 36% of voters said they would vote for the governor and 49% said they would vote against him. This reflects the growing disapproval among the governors Republican base, 69% of whom said they would vote to re-elect him in September, versus only 50% now.
Seriously, how can McClintock win if a dem gov gets elected?
Ooops, sorry Marshal, I meant to make that a reply to Fair Opinion.

Last I looked, they are separate elections. ;-)
So you'd vote McClintock for Lt Gov and for Gov....a dem?
Or abstain for gov, which means...a dem?
How 'bout getting McClintock to switch races ? It's time for liberals to be out of the Governorship for good.
We haven't had a non-liberal/RINO Governor since George Deukmejian.
I think he's locked into the Lt Gov position...ask Elk Grove Dan
Of course, if Arnold pulled out (very small chance), who knows.
At this point, I am hoping for more choices.
When push comes to shove, I will vote for the most conservative candidate.
Arnold is proving that that does not necessarily mean a Republican.
I have never voted for a democrat before, but Arnold is proving to be no different than them.
"Seriously, how can McClintock win if a dem gov gets elected?"
Real simple, Republicans like me won't vote for Arnold under any circumstances and will vote for McClintock.
"growing disapproval among the governors Republican base"
==
Is that the Republican base who couldn't bother to turn out and vote for parental notification, and for the "live within our means" proposition, two major conservative ideas?
And they call Arnold RINO?!
What do you call Republicans who vote against spending cuts and against parental notification?
I just could NOT vote dem...ever.
Some on FR are encouraging a dem vote for Juan Vargas down here in Chula Vista against Bob Filner, but Vargas is still hard core dem.
How dare Arnold demostrate Republican ideas! He didn't demostrate many but to hear liberals tell it you would think he was as far right as a person could get. I need to get out of this state, soon!
And 90% of the California voters will NOT vote for McClintock no matter what. So guess who is going to get elected? Certainly NOT McClintock.
Will you just abstain for gov then?
I just can't see facilitating a dem gov.
Someone should step up to compete in the Republican primary. A moderate Republican would get the support of conservatives (about 35% of the Republican Party and 15% of the electorate), a support that Schwarzenegger couldn't overcome.
A Republican moderate would be competitive in the general election because of the weakness of the Democrat opponent. Both conservative Democrats and all but blindly loyal Republicans are realizing the damage that Schwarzenegger and his Democrat allies in the Legislature have done to the state's finances. By design, The 2006-2007 budget won't be finalized before the primary. They red ink and liberal giveaways would wipe out any chance Schwarzenegger might have, in spite of CAGOP support.
Where do you get the nerve to make such an outrageously false claim like that, bud ?
