UPDATE: The National Weather Service reports that Augustine Volcano erupted again around 11:30 a.m. today.
HOMER - An explosive eruption of Augustine Volcano just before 9 a.m. Friday morning reportedly sent ash eight to ten miles into the sky, following closely on a somewhat smaller eruption earlier in the day. More eruptions are possible today, scientists said.
Ash from the explosions was drifting slowly toward the southern Kenai Peninsula. Flights were not being diverted as of mid-morning, according to aviation officials. But airliners flying into Alaska from the east were being spaced farther apart so that they could safely change direction if necessary.
There was no immediate expectation of ash fall reaching Anchorage, officials said.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District closed schools from Ninilchik south and cancelled athletic events in the area. Very light ash was reported falling near Homer about the time the second eruption was reported by eyewitnesses and recorded by seismometers.
Commercial jet pilots reported the second explosive eruption sent ash as high as 52,000 feet, said the Alaska Volcano Observatory. That eruption started at 8:48 a.m. and lasted about ten minutes.
A light ashfall from the second blast was expected to reach the Kenai Peninsula around 1 p.m., the National Weather Service said.
Friday's first eruption began at 3:55 a.m. and lasted 44 minutes. It sent an ash cloud some 34,000 feet into the air. The explosion took out a seismometer near the volcano's summit and may have included fresh magma, scientists said.

But such eruptions have NOTHING to do with global warming....
Isn't the dust (which screens heat and cools) more problematic than the sulfur dioxide and other belched greenhouse gases?
Sulfur Dioxide isn't a greenhouse gas, it's an aerosol, but it does block sunlight and causes cooling.
The ABSENCE of large volcanic eruptions may have contributed to some recent global warming. Overall, volcanoes COOL the earth.
I've had a very difficult time convincing people of this.
Anchorage OK from dust cloud?
What about tour ships coming up to the harbor if the reuptions get worse?

Your statement suggests some type of sarcastic comment. However, your lack of clarity could be interpreted or misinterpreted in many ways. What are you trying to say?
So far, Anchorage is okay. The dust has fallen in Homer, which is almost directly across Cook Inlet from the volcano, but not Anchorage, which is about 175 miles away as the crow flies.
I think the cruise ships land in Seward or Whittier, which aren't on Cook Inlet.
Not sure of locations: my parents took the cruise up there, so I only know the general descriptions.
We have got about four months to clean up before any cruise ship arrives.
The cruise ships do stop in Seward or Whittier, no major tours come up the Cook Inlet. Also, they won't start coming up here until May.
