Showstopper: Lamborghini Pulls Wraps Off Retro Miura Concept (Detroit's North American Auto Show)

LOS ANGELES — Lamborghini introduced the retro Miura concept, which hews closely to the celebrated 1966 original version, on Thursday at the Los Angeles auto show.

In a statement, Automobili Lamborghini said the new concept is "strictly a concept, with no firm date set for its production launch." However, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann recently told Car magazine: "We are not yet talking about production. But every project has its meaning."

The Miura concept is a landmark vehicle and the first Lamborghini to be designed by Walter de'Silva, head of design at the Audi Group. The company said de'Silva aimed at creating "a retro-inspired look heralding back to one of the auto world's most famous icons." The original Miura, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, was designed by Marcello Gandini and was presented at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show by Ferruccio Lamborghini and Nuccio Bertone. The original has been described as "the most famous high-performance car to be produced in Italy."

Lamborghini's official statement on the Miura did not include specifics such as horsepower. But the car is said to be adapted from the Gallardo and may be based on the same underpinnings as the future Audi R8 . The company said the concept will also be shown at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

What this means to you: Lamborghini doesn't seem to be entirely ruling out production of the Miura, and it's a good thing. A 21st-century Miura would be good for what ails…well, pretty much anybody.

Indeed it is. However, I could only afford a Vette not a Lamborghini. Sigh. LOL!

Well, I, um, I was just...(rubbing neck)

(whisper) Some people think American muscle is better so I included the concept cars for their lustful eyes.

No doubt. My favorite car will always be the little Fiat I had. POS but fun to drive. Used to drive it on river canyon roads. Our old RX7 wasn't bad either. Don't like the new models.

Buy now, they are going higher daily. My buddy bought one from Upstate New York last November. Red without matching numbers, has a 454. He paid 45,000. Matching numbers car with a true 427 is in the high six figures.

Cool! I still like the Xenon HIDS and the new look of the C6 05's. Blast to drive as well.

A 66 though. What a car! :-)

I think that is what ours was. Black even. Ours was a salvage that we bought from my brother in law when he bought his new one.
